And my knees are shot from basketball and my mum's feet from arthritis - many people have physical problems, however they don't get quite the same benefits as modern day footballers. So, yes, it is still a good life.

Not quite the same as being crippled by work. If posties were told that they would be employed until the age of 35 at the most and then would deal with a restricted lifestyle for the rest of their lives, I think we'd be picking up our mail at the post office.

Then again, I worked with a chef who cut himself 80 times in one 19 day voyage. He needed to lose weight anyway.

For six figure salaries plus the potential for other income, such as sponsorships, restaurants and bars, media work, consulting, etc, not to mention the exposure during the time you play and the extra side benefits, it's probably worth it, certainly more so than being a posty!

Society has alweays had it's gladiators.
Certain politically correct influences are trying to stopp this but they will not be successful.
Even if they manage to sanatize Aussie Rules to the point that it is not really even a contact sport anymore (they are getting close already), Another form of violent sport will rise up into popular culture. Society needs a nutral or manageble out let for it's violent nature. Otherwise we would be fighting each other on the street.

A rare time when we don't disagree FH. I'm not saying don't do it, I'm saying that I wouldn't. There are some roles in AFL (or styles of playing) that seem to inevitably lead to long term injury or disability. I don't think that any amount of money of fame would compensate for ending up a cripple. But obviously others do - and I love watching the show (especially when we win).

i am approaching the same conclusion,all been on the list for some time and very little return.could they all take early retirement?you couldn't give them away free to any other team,perhaps campbelltown!
