but seriously, ablett or dempster seem like good choices regarding long raking kicks. But I would like to see davis given the responsibility when he is in the midfield. just a question of where is playing and fitness to actually get down to the last line of defence

Barry is more your jump-over-the-top-of-the-pack type of pack mark.

I think Liz is more referring to the guy who stand with the pack and mark, like Dunkley used to. I think Ball and Saddo are probably our two best at that.

I still rate jolly as a chance to develop this. I remember at least one good contested mark he took last week on the wing.

We need one of three things:
a) Someone to take the pack mark. Atm, Ball, Jolley seem to be our only really strong candidates. And they're not that good really (in comparison with other clubs' options). This then leads us to...
b) A strategy whereby we contest these pack scenarios but have the crumbers who can clear it.
c) We create a favourable one-on-one where we have a small/medium who is good overhead...my suggestions earlier were Nicks, Saddo, Rhino, and you could add B2 to that list. You could probably have B1 or Ablett for the smaller mf'ers who can take a mark.

As to who's kicking it in then, Ablett, Dempster, Willo, Maxy, or Tadhg (but only if you can open the gates behind him so he has a 40m run-up before he kicks it).

But we have no strategy unless you call the current plan of not kicking to a contest, a strategy. What ever happened to the set plays, the huddle, the tap to yourself, the kick to numbers and my favourite, the trick play from a few years back where we kick long up the guts to a marking player who handballs quickly to a running player in full stride?

Works great when you have someone who can take a mark and get the quick handball away. Unfortunately we struggle a little with the pack mark as pointed out earlier.

What gets me at the SCG is that we go short. The ground is short so why not go long with Dempster to a contest/knock on. Gee if he clears the pack it will almost roll to CHF.

If you get plenty around the contest you are more that a chance to take it away deep into the forward line. But then again it would cause a problem with our flooding tactics if rebounded.

Heaven forbid our backmen having to go one on one on a rebound.

I'm with you all the way! But we have to be tactful about it, there's no point adopting the "kick and hope" strategy. Obvious targets are ball, goodes, jolly, B2...but then as someone has already mentioned we are not the best at pack marking/contested marks.

up the guts seems the logical method. When we fool around with it at the back (as we have done this year) and lose posession, we are losing posession in or around our defensive 50. However if u have a long kick, such as dempster, davis etc. kicking through to and possible even past the centre square (especially from a quick play-on and 5-10m run) then at least if we do lose posession the opposition has some work to do to get it through our midfield and back to the 50. At the moment i think everyone holds their breath as we kick in, i know i do.
If your going to lose possession better to lose posession as far away from your own goals as possible right? May as well boot it long and get it out of there, may seem negative footy, not trusting the backs to run it out, but they arent giving us much confidence right now. So id be happy to take my chances on a tall taking the mark or a crumber getting another quick kick forward and suddenly your in their forward 50 - as noted, the SCG is short - yet we rarely kick it long.. seems a bit weird n all.
