Homebush would bend over backwards to get more of our games. They are paying South and the Wests Tigers, $70,000 a match, both sides with average crowds of 15-20000.

If the Waratahs go out there, it is only 6 or so games a year, finishes early (compared to AFL) and they don't even play each team at home every year.

The Swans with 12 home games and a 30,000 average crowd guaranteed....you would imagine that would have their mouths watering.

The Swans are still in a very powerful position to negotiate with both grounds.

scg past use by date

as much as i love the scg i have to say if we are going to get serious about our footy and winning a premiership we have to relocate to the olympic stadium.

That's only going to seat 10,000 - hardly enough for a genuine AFL club.

That is the current plan but that doesn't mean it can't be made to hold more.

I haven't seen any details of this project (not even its exact location) but two things I hope are included:

1) The playing surface is of the correct size

2) The total area around it is sufficient so that larger stands can be built if and when needed (50,000-60,000 at least)

if memory serves correctly, this ground is being renovated to be of high enough standard to one day possibly be a training ground for a second sydney afl team. i don't think it is being viewed as a genuine afl ground now or in the future (except maybe for wizard cup matches). in the meantime it will be the best ground available for the sydney-based competitions.

telstra stadium can accomodate two sydney teams and has the mass-transit infrastructure already established. in twenty years (and perhaps as few as ten) i reckon there'll be an afl match there every week from march to august (and two derbys a year).
