The noisiest supporters need to sit/stand together, not having half a dozen at the front, 3 down the back, another handful to the side.

Like JF said, there were only about 20-30 Hawks fans making all the noise but they were together, plus they had good acoustics sitting underneath the stand.

If we could get 20-30 of us who are prepared to sing, shout all the way through the game, then we're on our way to a half-decent cheer squad

Sadly the rules regarding alcohol meant that people were split either side of the CS rope depending on whether they were drinking or not. If all the main chanting types ARE together you simply cant wave your flags. We managed a great compromise against Melbourne at the G last year, even getting enough of the soccer-friendly types together to attempt to get a few soccer songs going (thank heavens for that, chanting "Sydney!!!" and "RedWhite RedandWhite" gets very boring after a while). In Brisbane last year with an even smaller group we managed even better results, with the group basically singing soccer songs all day!

On Saturday not even the highly difficult chant of "Syyyyyyyydddddnnney" got a very muted response during the first quarter, and the typical glares and mutters from the huge granny contingent,who I know don't like me because of my noisiness. The attempts to start "La,la la la, la la la, la la la, la la la....SYD-NEY!" and "You are my Sydney" got so many stares from the denches brigade than I simply stopped mid-'la'-ing.

In Sydney even with flags as big as 12 feet high we sadly rarely have the problem of clanging flagpoles. Most people, for whatever reason choose to steer clear of sitting in the Cheer Squad, hence most of the seats remain empty. Or arrive unannounced, and get chucked out. HELP IS NEEDED! How about coming to give us a hand on Friday night!!!!! Our team, and our Cheer Squad, needs it BADLY! (Just ask me or Cathy first, OK!)

Is this an ongoing problem in melbourne RE - the cheersquad ?
If it is i would be interested to know if any of the CS members have gone to address the issue or bring it up at meetings etc ?
It needs to be addressed by the sounds of it.

You don't seem to realise Charlie that people at her old age don't appreciate a 15 year old with an opinion.

Still the argument was the best I've seen since Steve Pola chucked one of his many spastics at Adam Goodes during the second half of the Hawthorn semi a couple of years ago. Peter from Penrith snapped back at him, calling him an idiot, to which he agreed, before Steve continued to mouth off at Goodes once more.

Some of that lot don't even get it when we do the "ooooooooh Ugh!" when the boundary umpires are chucking the ball in.

The problem regarding the Melbourne Cheer Squad is that they are all dieing off .

It's defintiely a long time since I was last in Melbourne! Last time i sat with the CS down there, there was noise, coherence and general improvements on the things that have annoyed me abt both sydney AND melbourne CS's! It's a shame to hear it's gone downhill again

And Jules, you obviously didn't see the 97 all-in-brawl between the Sydney and Melbourne components of the CS after one of our bus trips down there (the only one i went on ever) was a bit of a slap in the face for the Melbourne guys - we arrived at gates-open at arctic park and took the seats the Hawks CS told us to, the Melbourne people arrived, didn't like the seats and decided to sit elsewhere and start chants opposite to us everytime we tried, and then in the final quarter, we were getting hammered and next thing we know people from the CS started throwing punches, then got stuck into the hawks and it all got a bit hairy! Kinda funny to look back on now tho!

I sure as hell did, because it was that brawl that I got involved in. It wasn't started by us but someone else who was sitting near us. A Hawks fan in the last quarter after they kicked a goal came down and started waving his flag like a dickhead and this guy sitting behind our area attacked him. This led to the Hawks fan getting involved and I was cought in the middle of it. It wasn't long but I managed to find myself thrown into some seats. The guy who did it was proud of himself and started celebrating, when BANG my father who saw I was in trouble came down and king hit this guy.

Needless to say I gave this guy a few kicks and was on my way. My father on the other hand went to work on this guy and had to be broken up by the cops who in turn kicked this guy out after asking me what happened. That night was hell. What went on with you guys Gem was stupid and was not supported by most of us. It was something to do with the leaders of the Melb CS

I was scared as hell at the time (only 13y.o too!), but i think the thing that was the worst was seeing people supposedly supporting the same side get stuck into each other after an evening of sniping and general bitchiness that surpassed the immaturity of even a group of schoolgirls! I spose we should be thankful for things like RWO etc that have built up a good relationship for many of us from either side of the border and beyond!

Gem around that time and even before then, problems between the 2 Cheer Squad were normal. Its down to the hard work of Cathy and Denice that its stopped, because it was getting out of hand - even to the point where the Melb CS refused to allow the Sydney based CS member to use our flags. Since 2000 things have been much better.

Interesting comments Robbie. I do recall a match at Waverley against St Kilda in 1996 where the Sydney and Melbourne supporters sat apart. This sort of thing is totally stupid. Thankfully it is definitely a thing of the past.

There HAS definitely been division in the past. We would go down to Melbourne and chant "Sydney!!!", whih still seemed to upset a lot of people (dumb Leigh in the CS for one!). I do recall that one supporter in the old days wouldn't wave a flag because it said "Sydney" on it. Several of the past CS presidents DID have a chip on their shoulder about us up here. One in particular was such a horrible individual that he became hated everywhere.

However I'd like to think that I've been one of the forerunners of ensuring that we all develop a sense of cohensiveness, and about the fact that we are following ONE CLUB. I have always sat with the Melbourne CS when I have been down there. On my first trip to Melbourne I even visited the Lake Oval, which was truly wonderful. And have chanted "Go Swans" instead of Sydney where it used to be necessary. Now Robbie and I help each other start the chants up after goals. (Thankfully only 'Sydney' at bequest of the club, as "Go Swans" always sounded very anoemic).

As Robbie said, things have changed heaps. We sing the same theme song now, and simply are two arms of a viable and healthy footy club. Some of the old grandmas in the Melbourne CS don't seem to like me much. (But they dont like Charlie and several others of the loud brigade either!) But that probably has to do more wth the fact that I get up and lead the chanting and sing "rugby songs" LOL rather than the fact I live north of the border. That generation will die off sooner or later. And people brought up with the Swans up here will become further and further the majority.

I think that forums like RWO have helpeed enormously in deseminating information to both supporter groups. The Melbourne people can get info as easily as we can. Hence much of the resentment (that things were being kept from them) has simply ebbed away.

There are still heaps of half-arsed supporters up here. But through this forum, we are finding out who are the fair dinkum Sydny Swans supporters. And who are the pretenders.

We are now more than acquaintences who see each other at matches and say Hi. The conviviality seen before and after the match on Saturday was testamount to that.

We are friends now. We are one. The way it should have been all along.

I wouldn't have mentioned inter-squad bickering on a public forum such as this anyway. (There are always private email addresses etc for things like that. Or Cathy....... )

We are trying to get people into joining up with the CS in Sydney. Airing dirty laundry is not the way to do that!
