    captain

An obvious new thread given the state of affairs..

With no disrespect to Kirky or anyone else that has had their name thrown into the Captain's ring, as Roos has previously alluded to a "youthy polcy", I wanted to suggest the potential of someone like Luke Ablett into the captaincy role.

Now before I am shot down in flames, let me pose my scenario ...

For the remainder of the year lets work on a rotational basis of ouf leadership group with the mentors. These mentors our future.

With no disresect to the likes of Kirk, Hall, Barry they may have 3 to 5 years and may have missed their opportunities. We want our new leader to be here for 5 years plus.

Then in 2006, lets give the captaincy to someone like Willo (most senoir, most respected and best midfielder as quoted by Roos) for the year to groom our potentail leader.

In these 18 months, why not mentor and groom the likes of Luke Ablett to be our future captain ...

He has the pedigeree, style, flair and the hunger to be a great palyer and captain of our club. He's shown a desire to better himself. He's willing to do the extra hours to improve and learn. And he is eager to learn from his peers - our leadership group.

There was an article not ong ago about willo and noggy where the club has implemented a metor and apprentcie scheme and I think it would be a AFL first to have a Veteran guide and a long term future potentail posessing dual captaincy responsibilites in 2006.

    Thoughts....

Not good enough at his age to be captain.
Captain Logic is not steering this tugboat.

I dunno if Nog is the man for the job but I like the thoughts behind your nomination of him. To be honest I think we have about 15 potential vice captains but not one stand out leader. I'd like Leo to get it for a couple of years and then pass it on to one of the young guys who has really established himself, but as I said, I like the thinking behind your suggestion.

Out of interest, who does captain the Magoos?

I see that Roos has learnt leadership techniques from the Sith.

I think the idea is based on the Paul Kelly model of captaincy, but I don't see any young players in the side who are capable of being captain for 10 years. Paul Kelly was one of a kind and I don't see another on our list who is capable of being captain for 10 years. There are only about two players under 24 in the competition at present who are a chance of emulating that feat (IMO, Riewoldt and Judd). Riewoldt is playing for a club with a revolving-door model of captaincy, and Judd is already playing under a good captain.

              This is my point.
He will be under the guidance of his mentor Willo and he leadership group for 18 months.

Look at the other clubs who have long standing captains ie, Ben Cousins, Voss, Crawford when he was for eg. Not sure of their age but hve been in the position for a long time.

If Ablett becomes as good as any of them it will be a wonderful thing.

But my point is that any players who became captains at a young age (eg: Carey, Hird) were outstandingly good. Ablett has only just established a spot in the side.

And probably made captain at the young age to lessen the chance of them being poached away.

FWIW, Goodes would make a good captain. Which makes me think, has an AFL side ever had an aboriginal captain ?

Goodes showed a touch of leadership tonight. Best for us I reckon. Shone all night.

Good last quarter, but only so so for the first three IMO.
