Apart from being good marketing, it is a very valid question.

Nothing pisses me off more than people who claim to be hard nosed supporters of their club, yet when asked for a financial contribution they can always offer some excuse as to why they aren't.

Those types can whinge and bitch and moan about the coach, the players, the administration, the board or whatever they like, but if they aren't members, they can't do anything to change any of the above.

So I say to those who aren't members on this Board (Geez I hope you are footyhead), until you earn the right to participate in the democratic process of the club by paying your membership (annually) here's a cup of shut the ***** up. Enjoy.

    RANT OVER!

Was a member for a number of yrs before a veritable flood of offspring made attendance problematic (3 in 2 yrs - u do he maths...).

Looking forward to getting back on board next yr with the kids a little bit older - the family package is actually pretty good value.

I'll be sure to let RWO know where we're sitting as I'm pretty confident none of you will want to sit near our horde.

I know this guy who gave his membership money to the Red Cross tsunami appeal instead. What an asshole.

By definition, if you haven't paid your fees (for whatever reason) then you are not part of the Swans.

You can be an interested observer but the club doesn't belong to you.

I've been a member since I was five, and my Dad for years before that. I haven't got around to it yet, no big deal.

Sorry but unless the money from the gate takings doesn't flow through to the Swans, I consider myself part of them (minus the voting rights and a little plastic card )

If you haven't paid your membership fees, do you think you fit under the following points (mainly from the Associations Incorporation Act NSW)

"Being a Swans Member has never had so many advantages. Not only does Membership give you entry into the game but also Swans Members receive exclusive discounts and benefits under the Swans Advantage Program."

"Incorporated associations must have an approved constitution and rules detailing matters such as:
                          ? Qualifications for membership"

"member, in relation to an association, means a person, body or organisation that is, under the rules of the association, a member of the association or, where the rules do not provide for membership of the association, a person, body or organisation that is a member of the committee of the association."

"(2) Subject to this Act, the rules of an incorporated association bind the association and the members of the association to the same extent as if the rules had been signed and sealed by each member and contained covenants on the part of each member to observe all the provisions of the rules."

Well, obviously you have to be a paid member to consider yourself a member, but where's the bit about being "part of the Swans"?

I know we will argue about anything here but this seems to have reached a new separation from reality.

The Oxford dictionary defines a part as:

"some but not all of a thing or number of things"

If you pay at the gate you are certainly part of the crowd but you are not part of the Swans unless you have an interest in the club.

And by interest I mean (OED again) "(usu. foll. by in) a financial stake (in an undertaking etc.) or a legal concern, title, or right (in property)".

Presumably you're also a "paid up member" and hence a "part" of the Pedantic Plonkers Association?
