How will the "Captains" be assessed?

I would love to know how the club will assess the success and/or failure of each potential captain over a two week period.

Interested to hear your thoughts on what the club may be looking for...

IMHO, although I think that Kirk is a fantastic club man and a consistent goer for the Swannies, I think we need a captain who can do the inspirational play to turn a game, lift a team during 'down' moments during a game.

Most captains in the AFL are ones who can turn a game through their skill and ability on their own... Cousins, Voss, Hird, Buckly, Riccuto (spelling?), Riewolt etc.

On that train of thought there are probably two players in the Swannies currently who could do that...Goodes and Barry Hall.

Looking foward to hearing your thoughts.

They're also generally consistently good, so that leaves only Hall really.

My understanding is that they will be judged on their skin folds.

Im still perplexed Mathews is in this group,

It must be based on a formula - if you have at least 5 years with the club, or we pay you over 250,000 and your under 32 congratulations you going to captain the Swans at some stage.

Ive been pretty impressed with Jude this season and moving forward looking to the future I would like to see either him or Kirk as Captain.

What is it with Roos he has a rotation policy for everything, I think what he would like to see is as the midfield rotate off the bench very 4mins and 25 secs the player that runs onto the field becomes the captain fair for everyone.......... ;o)

        Cheers

The leadership group is voted for by the players. So clearly they have a different view to Mathews' capabilities than you do.

Correct liz. But I agree with Wazza.

.....And here's the crucial part......the players are WRONG, and a nobody slob who only ever played one season outside under-age footy who now sits at a desk and widens his arse......is RIGHT!!

A couple of seasons ago I actually thought that Mathews would be a good choice for the captaincy. The main reason was that I like the aggressive, Michael Voss style captain and I noticed that whenever there was a bit of push and shove on the field, Mathews was always the first on the scene to help out his team mate.

Others may disagree but I think it's something that a leader needs to do and I would think that his team mates would respect him for it.

I agree. Maxy tended to do this pretty well. Bolton took on Spider in game 1 this year. Hall should do it but he is taking tranquilizers or doing too much yoga.

It's quite funny to watch Hall in that situation. You can see the anger and then in a flash it's replaced by serenity and off he jogs.

Yet Hunter still heard footsteps, even though Bazza was stil a good 20m away

I believe mocaholic made some good points on this question.

IMO it will be a combination of things like:
                          - How do the other players respond
                          - What sort of effort does the Captain and the players around them make
                          - Do they have an influence all over the ground, or does their position on the field prevent it (ie. back vs midfield/ruck vs forward)
                          - Do we win (factor in opposition, margin, errors, etc)
                          - Does their own output improve
                          - What do the other players think (including what they say in the media)

On these counts I reckon Kirk has a good score already. Maybe a 9/10 (minus one for opposition being weak, and us making hard work of winning)?

If people are interested, we could create a sticky that lets US tally our scores/votes for each captain as the season progresses. At least it gives the whingers something to complain about, and the blindly optimistic something to crow about
