Fair to say we weren't watching a Grand Final dress rehearsal today, but the wind didn't help. It was very gusty, but hard to tell that from the stands. Once you got outside you really noticed it though.
Was Today Ugly?

i was sitting in one of the bays and the wind really picked up in the 3rd quarter...
the game had a few major higlhights
*Jollys mark
* Leos all round perfomance
but it still had some cringeworthy moments....A little man is sitting in a room with two doors. One door says "Do Not Enter" and the other says "Do Not Exit". So he just sits there, holding his hat.Comment

IMHO, the only video the team should consume this week is the round 1 win vs. Hawthorne. The guys need to realize they are fully capable of kicking an 18.10 score line.Comment

I thought it was an ok game to watch from the comforts of my home. It was physical game and we applied huge pressure on the man. I think the workrate makes it seem ugly, but to me it's just good pressure football.
edit: hang on, I just realised I only saw half the bloody game on Fox. So maybe the other half that I didn't see was ugly football. Sorry Sharpie I can't answer the question until I see the whole game. Looking at the game on television it looked as if the wind was blowing the ball around quite a lot in the shots at goal, which caused some of the inaccurate scoreline. Would some of the stoppages have resulted from the windy weather? Windy-weather footy cannot be as pretty as weather played in calm conditions or hermetically-sealed domes."Unbelievable!" -- Nick Davis leaves his mark on the 2005 semi finalComment

Some images of the Jolly mark:
I liked how Tredrea got in between Barry and Jolly so Barry would have felt minimal impact.Comment

presuming the weather is good, i fancy our chances in kicking accurately on Sunday, its about time we turned the tables. it should be a great game although i get the feeling we may try and turn it into a scrap. If ugly footy = wins, then of course I'll take it.Come on Magic!Comment

but I hope he stays in for next week.He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. (John Updike, seeing Josh Kennedy in a crystal ball)Comment

Poor old McVeigh - he's in and out of the team more than a thing that's in and out frequently... no wonder he's struggling to find form - always scare to make a mistake otherwise he gets dragged or dropped. Needs a decent run to see what he can do - others seem to have been given that chance.Captain Logic is not steering this tugboat.

Had it come off it would have been highlighted as a small moment of brilliance in an otherwise low quality game. If you want players to take risks you have to accept that sometimes they are not going to come off. So long as players have a decent understanding of their abilities and don't consistently try to exceed those abilities I don't have a problem with them not always taking the "safe" option.
As for his place in the team, surely he has to be given a real go, ala Ablett last year. Ablett really didn't deliver much at all last year other than in three or four games (and even those were generally solid rather than brilliant) but it is clear that the sustained time he got onfield laid the foundation for his development into a pretty handy player now. I would have thought that McVeigh deserves the same investment right now.Comment
