DPW, I was waiting for that and yes, I umpired between 2000 and 2003 but have not gone back to it for time constraints.

So yes I do feel qualified to comment on the standard of umpiring and yes, the umpiring was shocking last week.

The worst umpiring decision of the weekend wasn't in the Swans-Port game. In the Essendon-Freo game, after an Essendon player infringed and then a Fremantle point was scored, the umpire gave the Essendon player the choice of the free or the point instead of the Fremantle player.

Not surprisingly, the umpire responsible has been sent to umpire purgatory this weekend by serving a stint as an emergency umpire.

I think the majority of RWO posters who have commented on the umpiring have a fairly solid understanding of the rules. However, I agree with your comment that a lot of people do have blinkers on when it comes to umpiring - and let's face it, if you support a team as fervently as many of us do, it's bound to happen.

Umpiring would have to be one of the toughest jobs - as Glen said, you receive no acknowledgement if you have a good game, but if you have a bad game you cop an awful lot of flack. You also have to be incredibly perceptive, not to metion freakishly fit. I think it's only fair to expect a certain amount of mistakes from the umps - after all, they're only human. Generally, I don't mind the occasional mistake - I just don't like it when contentious decisions start dictating the outcome of a game (primary example: Barry Hall's free kick in the game versus Brisbane).

Goldshpincter has tonight's Saints Cows game. Typical isn't it - he has a total shocker last week and gets rewarded with the Friday night game. The AFL and their handling of poor umpiring is a joke!
As long as he does'nt have our game, I don't care which game he has.

Not nice to bitch about them when we won, but they murdered us in the first quarter, then let us get away with a bit which made it a bit less annoying but still, they stunk early.

Well they wont let women umpire senior football for a start - so that counts me out.

dpw - your comments that most of us on the board dont know the rules are out of order. Most of us have a very sound knowledge of the rules of the game thank you very much.

Yes there are problems with umpire numbers in all sports - but if we have 8 emergency umpires for a round - then why cant one of them have a go and Goldspink do the community a service AND RETIRE!

last week for example there were too many decisions that could have turned the game and it could have been our season that took a nose dive had we lost. Thats what we are getting at - yes there is room for human error, its when the errors of those said humans become more ridiculous and greater in number that are cause for concern and comment. And its not just our side - the opposition cop it as well.
I used to be indecisive, but now I'm not so sure..................
