They could change it for next year and the Aints and cats could be cellar dwellers, who knows. -

It certainly was NOT flat at the Gabba this year mate. They are scared of us. And know we love beating them. They often do not cope with getting beaten by us too.
Beating them at Homebush will be just as pleasing. They are going badly. So what, the Lions hardly ever bring much away support.
Maybe there will be lots of people down for the Bloodyslow Cup from Brisbane. It would be interesting if some actually see this weekend as a chance to be introduce to our game for the first time and go to the match at Homebush.
I'd love a Swans match in Melbourne on the same weekend as a Wallabies international for the same reason.

If you are referring to Geelong, you may be very wrong. Two of Sydney's biggest ever SCG crowds (one was the biggest Swans SCG crowd ever) have been against the Cats. If Sydney and Geelong keep winningn there's no reason to believe that the Cats game wont pull 40,000+ if the weather's good.

I think you'll find the biggest SCG crowd was, because of the Lockett v Ablett shootout. Not sure about the other one. The difference now is that the cats are full of no name players, if you are not an AFL fan then most would not have heard of them.
We ended up losing the game by 13 odd points but it was a good atmosphere. Unless they redevelop the SCG, we will never get a crowd that big there again (unless they make another mistake)!

The other game that he was referring to was against Geelong on a Saturday night at the SCG either the last round of 1997 or 1998 where they just let people in the gates and we had a crowd of over 44,000. People were just standing anyway they could get a vantage point to see the game.

We still had Lockett (5.0), but no Ablett.
The other one I was thinking of was '96, it was 44,047, and we won by 51 points.
Lockett (6.1), Ablett (2.1) - Musta had Dunkley the miser on him.Comment

OK. It was '97, it was 46,168 and we lost by 10.

WOW! I still cannot believe they got 46,000 into the SCG! That was truely a memorable night. Thanks for the research Scott, I tend to just try and base things on memory...I don't think I did too bad (44,000 and losing by 13 points!)Comment

The SCG was bursting at the seams that day in 1997. A lot of SCG members turned up (for their once a year Swans game) and couldnt get in, which really pissed them off. To try to placate them, officials allowed them into Aussie Stadium to watch it on the big screen there (I'm not sure how many did). The SCG Trust copped a lot of criticism from SCG members about that and consequently, are now very (overly) cautious about the number of guest passes that they sell for admission to the SCG members area.Occupational hazards:

The 46,000 game (detailed by Scott) was also the cause of the membership cap of (I think) 5000 on full (but not reserved seat) members and why us reserved seat members supposedly get into the Noble/Ladies stands until after the game - although the Noble stand Dining arrangement seems to have nullified that restriction.
All the SCG Trust and Gold members screamed blue murder when they were turned away at the gates.
It really did breach all safety standards though. In the Noble stand every aisle was chockers with people sitting on the steps and the walkway was full of people standing. Sure glad I got there early that day.
Apart from (maybe) the Lockett/Ablett aspect I don't think anyone really knows why those two Geelong games drew the record crowds. Geelong games since haven't gone near them.
The 96 game was my son's 10th birthday so we took three of his mates to the game (the advantage of a family membership)Last edited by j s; 25 May 2005, 11:42 AM.Comment
