Yeah, I know what you are saying but when a packed SCG does rock, the atmosphere is equal if not better than most other AFL grounds.

But why can't a Saturday night match at the SCG be switched to Homebush if the crowd looks like being over 35000, and Homebush is free?

Most definitely. I think Dipper said in 1996 that a SCG crowd of 37-40000 at finals time on a Saturday night had all the electricity of 70000 in Melbourne. I totally agree with him.

Telstra Stadium needs a big crowd to generate atmosphere (even though the Pies game in 2003 was very poor because of all the part-timers along for the ride). But the Brisbane final helped stem my concerns once and for all. Starting up the "!! !!! !!!! SY'NEY! and having the whole ground join in is a rush that is just unable to be described.

Speaking of Telstra Stadium I cant go to the Collingwood game because of a 20th anniversary party for 2 of my best mates that same night and its killing me. I am so annoyed that its on the same night as that game. I have thought long and hard about acceptable excuses but they are not football people, so there are none I can give that they would understand or appreciate. Damn.

the alternate venue may not be that easy to procure given the demands of the other two codes in this city. it may be necessary to change the time and/or day to secure it. given though that those kinds of changes would make it extremely unpopular with the television stations, i doubt the change would go ahead.

I know what you are going through. Many Sydney people just have no concept of the psyche of a football fanatic. I still get fellas in shock that I would seriously consider flying to Melbourne for something as 'peripheral' as a football match. (Then you hear that the same person flew to London for a Madonna concert and flew home the next day! )

Nobody dares ask me to give up a Swans match any more. My indignance is often so strong that they back right off. BUT conversely I do miss out badly on developing friendships with people outside footy as a result. people think of you as some sort of freak or something. All because you cherish the loyalty to your football team that bit more than you do the friendship of your friends. Still, we have a pretty close knit bunch these days at not only Swans but Kings (and even the odd Roosters or Sydney FC) match these days. So we are getting as social as we traditionally have been in Melbourne.

You can always say you were sick Cruiser. It has worked for me.

My guess - public transport.

You probably need to fill out a years worth of forms to get the appropriate public transport support for a major sporting event at Homebush.

It really depends on how close to the date you're talking about.

Realistically, the following needs to happen.

- The SCG needs to contact all their staff rostered on that day and tell them they are no longer required
- The SCG needs to contact their suppliers - food, drink, etc - and tell them they are no longer required
- The SCG needs to sort out permits etc with the councils (not sure what this involves)
- The SCG needs to be happy about losing the revenue from the game

and vice versa for Telstra Stadium having to organise things.

IMO even with a couple of months notice it would be very difficult as each stadium is managed by a different group, and I assume have different groups of staff/suppliers.

The stadiums are far more flexible than that.

The NRL?s exact schedule is only confirmed a month before the games are to be played. The clubs only know what weekend their fixture is scheduled for and where it is to be played at the beginning of the season and as each week elapses the exact days/times are allocated for the round a month ahead. For example the NRL?s dates are only confirmed up ?till round 16 (June 24,25,26), all the subsequent rounds in their H&A season are yet to be confirmed.

Each stadium is aware that a game will be played on a particular weekend but they won?t know the exact date/time until 4 weeks before game time. In Round 18 (8,9,10 July) there are NRL matches scheduled for Aussie Stadium and Telstra Stadium, the ground managers/caterers etc will not be able to make preparations and staffing arrangements until about the first week of June.

Remember at finals time stadiums have to be able to react to schedules set less than a week ahead, so they can react VERY quickly if necessary.

I?m not advocating that the NRL system is better than the AFL?s, but it does show that stadiums can react very quickly to schedule changes, provided the date is available.
