Umpiring vs Saints

I was going to go on and on about the umpiring to get rid of my angst but I think I'll leave it at..........I AGREE.
There was one instance where B2 was fallen on etc.in the back etc and the t.v. showed the umpire dithering about giving the decision and finally begrudgingly giving the decision(it wasn't a playon advantage situation). I think I screamed out loud then also.I couldn't just leave it at I AGREE could I?

B1 got 2 maybe 3 HTB decisions against him, all warranted.

Saints got 3 goals from dodgy frees in the first half, and we were only down by 3 goals at that stage.

Then there was the MOL mark in the first term.

The thing I found hard to fathom was why Gehrig got a mark when he pushed Leo in the back. but When LRT pushed Riewoldt in the back Reiwoldt go the free.

We were absolutely crucified by the umpires.

Firstly, i'll say that I believe that we would have lost last night regardless of how poor the umpiring was...we just were never the better team. However, whilst saying that, I can also say that it was one of the worst umpiring displays I have ever seen. That mark to Mickey that they missed was an absolute joke, those free kicks in the forward line to Gehrig and Riewoldt were terrible - they were right in front of where I was sitting and even blind Freddy could have seen that they weren't frees. If anything, the Gehrig one whould have been paid the other way. I also saw, down the other end, Gehrig give the shove to end all shoves to mark the ball - free kick paid to us...? No. Mark, goal to Gehrig. I was sitting next to one of my best mates at the game, a Richmond supporter, who said that he never recalled seeing so many throws called against one team ever in a single game. I find it hard to believe that our skills are that bad (I realise they are bad at the moment) to warrant so many throwing decisions.

I'll be the first to admit, I am a very passionate supporter of the swans and very one eyed, so maybe my opinion really counts for jack all. But last night's umpiring display made me very annoyed. I mean, I say that we would not have won the game and probably not...but how the hell were we supposed to get in to the game in the first half with that crap standard of umpiring...? OK, so the umpires are not to blame for us being pretty ordinary this season in our performances, but they sure as hell didn't help last night...

Agre - we played bad - and agree umpire Mclaren was their player.

Has anyone statistics on win/loss ratio with Goldspink and McLaren - I am sure it would be interesting reading.

Even my missus - a one-eyed Pies supporter - was indignant about the umpiring on Saturday night. I had to calm her down at one stage there when it was one dodgy decision after another.

But what do you do? No one outside the Swans cares (except my missus apparently...), & Roos doesn't seem to have the balls to take them on.

So if we'd played good football the umpires would have paid us more free kicks? You might be right - the umpires might find our style as agonising as the commentators and the supporters.

Still I'm pretty certain that's not what the rules book says.

I think the umpires can be more favourable to the team that is playing better football and more down on the team playing ugly football.

Human nature to assume that the team that looks better knows how to play and is less likely to commit infringements, but the ugly side clogging it up and tackling all the time is more likely to give away free kicks.

That doesn't explain the poor umpiring on Saturday or every poor umpiring decision, but I'm sure it makes a difference at the margin.

Play well and you seem to get all the goods bounces (poor Nicks) and the favouritism of the umpires.

I think the umpires are responding (let's hope it is subconsciously) to all the negative hype about Sydney's gameplan and penalising the team for playing that way. I haven't analysed the figures but I am sure that no other team is so often in the negative for free kicks and by such huge amounts. Also home town umpring is a fact of life, but it doesn't occur as much in Sydney as they are a less demanding crowd so things do not even up overall. The umpring last Saturday was definitely biased and influenced by the crowd but probably was also influenced by the media. I just wish Roos and the club had the guts to say something. Everyone can criticise us but we can't say anything back.

What really amused me was that in the last quarter there was a couple of very obvious free kicks to St Kilda player that where not given as the umps want to even the card up. At one stage in the 3rd quarter it was 15 to 5. The paper had the final count at 18 to 10.
I'd love to see the count for frees at 3 quarter time for all the Swans games over the last couple of years.

The Saints fans in front of and behind us agreed that we got a bad deal from the umps. We agreed that we played crook. But frees that aren't and non-frees that are can make a difference at crucial points.

Yep, can add weight to neutral observers rating it a poor poor umpiring performance. My mate's dad watched from home and he's a Hawks man, first thing he said to me on Sunday morning was we missed all the 50/50s.

McLaren was to blame for most of the rubbish too. The bloke stuffed up every time he put the blower to his ugly gob.

If there is a football god, he will be blowing the whistle and holding the mark in a drunk's league for the rest of 2005. VFL is above him.

He's too old and too slow and besides, "his family can't cope with the criticism". Call a press conference for that Scotty and watch me shove MMM mic down your throat...probably quite enjoy that he would and call another press conference!

The one that made my jaw drop was when Ackland grabbed the ball out of the ruck, was tackled (auto free kick, not paid), the ball spilt to B1 who was run into the ground - clear ITB.

Paid HTB against him.

I went psycho.
