Apologies for those who already know, but I am confused. What's an 'official' match as opposed to a 'real' match?
And you can't find nothing at all,
If there was nothing there all along.

Official senior matches = senior matches scheduled by the AFL as official fixtures. So that is home and away matches, finals, Wizard Cup matches (and its predecessors such as the Fosters and Ansett Cups), international rules and formerly (as well as if it ever returns) state football.

It doesn't include Wizard Regional Challenge and other practice matches (which, whilst they may be scheduled by the AFL, are not official fixtures), VFL/SANFL/WAFL/QAFL/ACTAFL matches (even though these are senior leagues, as they are not scheduled by the AFL) or reserves/under 19s games (when these levels existed).

So that's official matches, which are used by the AFL in awarding life memberships, and which I believe are used to determine membership of the 200 and 300 games clubs (which I *think* are actual clubs, not positive of this though).

'Real' matches are home and away matches and finals. Matches that count towards the premiership, with all others excluded. For instance, Nick Malceski had played at least one, possibly two or three, 'official' pre-season matches before Saturday, but his 'AFL debut' is nonetheless universally recognised as having occurred on Saturday.

Just to confuse things further, I think only pre-season competition games count - ie Wiz Cup games do but Wiz Regional Challenge Series games don't.

Yep - I meant the regional challenge when I said 'practice matches'... well, that and the odd outlier like the London exhibition match (which I'm 90% sure doesn't count as 'official') and the North Sydney Oval match against Essendon.

Edit: cleared up the ambiguity in my original post.

I'm not sure about this one, my head says he hasta be in the best 22.
But my heart remembers the way we treated Rod Carter as he approached the 300, very sad.
