Ok - I'm a Benny basher - have never denied it.

And yes he played reasonably well on Sunday - the thing he
doesn't do it often enough. Others get dropped for less.

In recent times I was turning blue because of him and LRT and their poor disposals and their questionable decision making. I'd hold my breath every time.

I just think he is highly over rated, has caused so many turnovers and he doesnt make quick decisions, yet he never gets dropped.

Whether he would be a good captain, we wont know until its his turn, he may be a great bloke, doesnt mean he would be a great captain though.

So bag me all you like Redunderthebed - I admit I'm not a Benny fan. So Bite me!
I used to be indecisive, but now I'm not so sure..................

In fairness to LRT there is over 100 games difference btw the two of them.

No, he is one of the workhorses, in the team, he seems to be the go to player coming out of defence, gets a lot of handball/kick receives coming out of that area. And he hangs onto the ball far too long everytime, but he is not on his pat malone there.

As Liz (I think) pointed out a while ago, we win more games with him in the team than when he is not.

each to their own Scott, have just never rated him. As I have said previously, others have been dropped for making less errors - but not Matthews - why?

I give up. There is obviously a lot that goes on within the club that we have no idea about.

He is part of the leadership team (voted for by the players) and has a shot at the captaincy (as remote as it is).

He is seen as a key player in the team, by the selection panel.

While I share your (and others) frustraion, he does get the pill an awful lot. I think his "mishaps" are far more obvious than his "non mishaps"

This is from his profile on the swans site.
"Arguably the Swans' most consistent player, he had another fine season in 2004 and was sixth in the club best and fairest. Can play on the wing, on a half-back flank or as a midfield tagger and his aggression, toughness and ability to read the play are invaluable assets. Broke an ankle in the semi-final against St Kilda and was sorely missed. Had 404 possessions in 23 games, including 31 against the Kangaroos in round four. "

Unlike the Swans profile, I'm not convinced he'd be sorely missed any more. Indeed, it might well help our game plan.

A goodish experienced defensive type - beyond that I don't particularly rate him (tho he has now proved he can kick straight which is a useful talent in this squad atm).

He's very good at reading the ball (as well as his defensive aspects), which is why I was hoping he could become a centreman. However, his disposal and decision making just haven't improved enough to warrant him being at the centre of the play.

Come on boys, give Benny a serve, he played bloody well, didn't slow the play, kicked accurately and handled Bell pretty well.
                    Multi posting 'experts'....where are you?
I haven't read any of the posts re this subject apart from your initial thread, but here goes my load up on Ben Matthews...

"Ball-up" Benny played well if you compare him to an NRL player finding touch.....Matthews constantly takes possession of the ball and either forces a ball-up (when he has ample opportunity to dispose of the ball) or kicks to a player leading wide or already positioned hugging the boundary line.

Please advise if you think the above analysis benefits the team ???!!!

It doesn't and once again he was deplorable, yes D-E-P-L-O-R-A-B-L-E !

BTW, Peter Bell was given votes in most media awards and was there only decent player in an otherwise slipshod Fremantle team.

                    Ben Matthews = trade bait

                      Scott West recent disposals:
                      22 39 28 36

                      Josh Francou recent disposals

                      Peter Bell
                      29 28 19

Bold indicates games tagged by Ben Matthews.

Would we have beaten Port so easily if Francou had had 24 possessions?

I think the question that needs to be asked is as follows -

Would the Swans win more games if we didn't play negative taggers like Matthews who doesn't know how to get the ball and then fails MISERABLY when he gets the f'en thing ??

You are wrong. Mathews KNOWS how to get the ball - thats the problem! He shouldn't touch the damn thing but he is very good at getting it. If got less possession there would be less reason to not like him.
