Although I'm not a Swans supporter, I think that just shows the great work that Hall does - not only is he a power forward but he is also althletically gifted and works very hard as well.

It shows that there are others that do the same kind of work that Riewoldt does, but do not get the same praise.

In short what I'm trying to say is...

    HATS OFF TO BARRY HALL!

Interesting piece, but I dispute the suggestion at the end that players of the ilk of Lockett would be obsolete in today's game. He couldn't play the role that Hall plays but a true full-forward of that skill and power would still have a place in any AFL team.

Fraser Gehrig doesn't play a dissimilar role, and he and Riewoldt get along pretty well together.

"old-fashioned full-forwards such as Tony Lockett were forever extinct" - this is rubbish. How much more effective were Brisbane last year with Lynch standing in the goal square!
Captain Logic is not steering this tugboat.

What I would give to have a young Lockett on our list (minus the St Kilda) attitude. That is just about the dumbest thing I've read all week, which is saying something given some of the rubbish on the Ben Matthews thread.
He had observed that people who did lie were, on the whole, more resourceful and ambitious and successful than people who did not lie.

Agree, players as uniquely talented as Lockett will never be extinct. In fact their sheer ability to win one on ones might even see more balls being kicked to contests. I agree with the Gehrig analogy, he has reinvented himself as a gorilla in the goalsquare a la Lynch because of his strength. His teammates have confidence in him and he creates spillages for his crumbers.

              Interesting points.

I agree the traditional full-forward will continue to exist, but may become obsolete within the AFL.

Why you ask? Players in today's game are demanded to be more versatile and skilful in a wider variety of positions than ever before, and therefore it would be unlikely that any 'traditional full-forwards' will be picked up in the draft, leaving the existing ones to 'die out'.

You have a look at what you would want from a draft...clubs demand 'key position players' not solely full forwards because of their versatility..you must give Roos some credit as he is 'in the know' and knows what kind of game the AFL is becoming.

Feel free to disagree, but that is my view.

Fair enough. Does that mean there are no full backs either?

I disagree. It's certainly heading that way, but before too long some clever recruiters and coaches will work out there is a better way to play. They will recruit some footballers with good skills, grab a couple of key position players, park them in th eforward line, kick it long, and win.
