Doesn't matter who the umps are, we will still give away too many dumb frees.

Interesting stat for 2005 up to and including today:
Matches between Vic team and Non-Vic team at home ground of NV team - frees for and against are 485 V and 489 NV.
Matches between Vic team and Non-Vic team at home ground of Vic team - frees for and against are 468 V and 360 NV.
So where is the home of "hometown" umpiring??? Melbourne!Comment

For anyone who complains that we are unfairly treated, have a look at Kennelly's untidy tackle just then, resulting in a free kick and shot at goal. Typical of what happens.Captain Logic is not steering this tugboat.

If the umpires hadnt crucified us against the tigers**, we'd be sitting 2nd at the moment, and a chance to hold it through the completion of the round.

Don't get me started on tonight's performance by the umps though. It looked at times as if the two teams were playing by different rules in respect of holding the man and holding the ball.Comment

Of course they do, but if the frees were mostly warranted (as they were last week) then it's a bit academic.

I admit our defense gives away too many. But most infringements get caught, which cant be said for the free's against our forwards.Comment

Maybe Sydney are a victim of the defense giving away to mnay frees, the Umps think Sydney play a style that over steps the rules, therefore any frees are just being "staged"
At least a 50m penalty came tonightPremiers 09,18,33,05

The umpires penalise Sydney so much as the AFL doesn't like Sydney's perceived style of play as it doesn't make for interesting TV viewing. Thus the umpires are instructed to pay against Sydney so much so they will change their style of play. It all boils down to $$ and it stinks that one club is treated differently to others.---------||--ANNE--||----------Comment

Even if this should be paid as a free, then as someone else has mentioned where is the consistency???? I can remember at least 3 similar cases where we don't get paid the same free in similar situations.Comment

While one might argue that many of the umpires decisions to pay frees against Sydney were technically correct (but a lot were really bloody soft), its the lack of consistency ie not paying Sydney for the same against Geelong, that was so infuriating.Occupational hazards:

Just did a quick free analysis (2005) comparing Swans vs Vic based & non Vic teams:
ALL 2005: For: 248 (81%), Against: 306 (123%)
vs VIC based: F: 158 (74%), A: 214 (135%)
vs non VIC: F 90 (98%), A: 92 (102%)
vs VIC (last 6): F: 88 (62%), A: 142 (161%)Comment

I failed stats at uni, but I thought overall percentages might be more useful...
Frees For - Against
ALL: 45% - 55%
vs VIC based: 42% - 58%
vs non VIC: 49% - 51%
vs VIC - last 6: 38% - 62%
It appears we don't give away as many "silly" frees against non-Vic teams.Comment
