Re West Coast, I like the name. I figure it was chosen because they are a team that represents more than just Perth, rather all of WA (or so they liked to think at the time). They have a strong following all over the state.
Because in theory they are alot more like an NFL franchise than any of the 'traditional' clubs are. Sure they are not own by a Glazer type, out to make a buck out of them. But they have no member voting rights. And are run very much like a business. With supporters having NO IMPUT at all in terms of the way they are run. Fremantle on the other hand do represent something. Members can not only vote, but can get on the club board. I still think they stuffed up horribly with their club's colours, but at least their club is supposed my real people. Who are prepared to sit through losses unlike the yuppies from Cottesloe who follow the Eagles.

You have to realise that the WA derby is not really a fair derby. It is a whole state against a small seaside suburb south of the river. Hence I feel empathy with the Dockers, especially in the face of near blanket ridicule by a very very pro-Eagles WA media.

Sounds a bit like Sydney 1982 to 2004.

This was virtually ruined I feel in the mid 80's with all the razamatazz the dodgy Doctor introduced.
Working class demographic? Blue collar market? I've heard these arguments before but it's a bit too late for that approach. Over the past 10 years Dogturd Howard and his cronies have systematically dismantled these elements of the community. However they should return sometime in August but more in a lumpenproletariat guise following the introduction of the new IR legislation. Sadly though, these folk will be unable to afford to attend the footy and they will probably be working weekends by then anyway.

I like to yell out 'Go Bloods' at the footy at all venues including the SCG. I think we should all respect the heritage of this proud club, remember its roots and honour the ties with South Melbourne.

Incidentally blood cells are red and white. This post could do with another errant theory.

A real WA derby was the clash between East and South
          Fremantle.

Right to clear up any myth's that hang around this, the official reason we got our name according to the Official Historian of the AFL, Col Hutchinson is:

Originally, the team was refered to as the "Southerners" or the "Bloods" (and in some cases "Blood Stained Angels"). Before 1933 the club had NO official nickname and because of the influx of Western Australian recruits, the club was dudded the Swans by football fans and the media.

However that was not the reason we adopted the nickname on an official basis.

We adopted the "Swans" nickname because of the vicinity of the Lake Side Oval to Albert Park Lake and a group of Swans that nested there from time to time, thus contributing to the real reason why the club adopted the un-official nickname of the Swans on an "official basis".

So the WA players and the Swans beside the ground are both correct and the reason we officially became known as "The Swans" in the mid 1930's.

Sydney Bloods sounds good to me, but it will never happen.

As far as the Swans go. I want them to include the logo on the jerseys by extending the V shape to its bottom point where the Swans head is in the picture below the silhouette of the opera house
                  Go the BLOODS!
