It's a tough one. I can't split Goodes and Kirk. On the one hand, Goodes is young, brilliant and at the crux of the club's future. He's courageous - in 2004 he battled through pain and injury for the club's sake, which he is rarely acknowledged for. And he'd be a high profile captain, which I feel is important if we are serious about selling AFL to the masses up here.

On the other hand, Kirk is a tough, tireless, consistent performer. Rarely has an off day. Doesn't have the profile and sheer skill of Goodes but earns his place in the side each week which is more than can be said for the majority of others. If past leaders are anything to go by, I think Kirk may well be our man - he is a workhorse player in the mould of Kelly, Dunkley, Cresswell and Maxfield.

For me it comes down to this question: which is more important in a leader - consistency or brilliance? Hard to answer.

Kelly was both. Sadly we didn't see him at his best for very long. by the time he really "arrived" and realised that he did belong in the elite, he only had a three full seasons before he did his knee. From there he battled a series of injuries, which meant he could only produce his best in fits and starts. But for that short period he was just as able as a Cousins or Buckley to grab a game by the scruff of the neck.

Kirk is a wonderful, wonderful player - courageous, works himself so hard and you can generally count the number of ordinary games he has during a season on half a hand. He's not, however, going to appear in any pundit's list of top 10 players in the competition.

On our list at the moment, only Goodes and Hall have that potential. Goodes may not quite have the consistency of Kirk but his poor games this year and in 2003 were pretty rare. And I agree with whoever stated that he didn't get the credit he deserved last year for battling through two injuries that would have had many others giving themselves extended breaks.

Either of these two would be worthy but Goodes ability to impose himself gets him my vote.

Goodes for mine. He did everything in his power to get us over the line. Maturing player who has longevity on his side over Hall.

Goodes or Hall. How can u not say that goodes is a favourite after that performance against the crows.

                Kirk.

I was speaking to my father in the car when he was wearing a Swans hat and I said, "Dad, who signed your hat?" and he said "Brett Kirk," and I said, "Why him?" and he responded, "Because he's going to be captain!"
Vicky Pollard: Oh my god I so can't believe you just said that this is like the time I threw Anita's nokia in the canal as a joke and she's like you have well got to buy me another one and I'm like get over it and then Paul came over who's adopted anyway and started saying that I fancy Mark Bennett but oh my god just because I have sex with someone doesn't mean I fancy them.

He's a quiet bloke anyway and I don't think he needs the additional media committment of being captain.
I think he grew/came out of his shell as captain, so Goodes for me too.

Goodes for me - after seeing him play on Saturday night, he has what it takes. (even though my admiration for Barry Hall is well documented.)
I think that Adam can get the team motivated and he is very level headed.
I used to be indecisive, but now I'm not so sure..................

I still think Kirk. He may not be a flashy player, but maybe that's exactly what we need: a workhorse captain. Let the snazzy players do their thing, with Kirky controlling the middle.

Anyhoo, I have a vibe that they'll name a captain with 'zone captains' supplementing the traditional VC role.

PS: Goodes comes a very close second, though.

Goodes for me. I think his mobility around the ground would help in marshalling the troops. If the team is struggling in one area he has the ability and is given the initiative to move there and get the team going again.
Kirk being the great ball winner he is possibly to much of an inside player and may not have the perspective on the game that Goodes does.

With Goodes you get both, a hard worker and a flashy player.

I'd be very happy for either Kirk or Goodes.

Can't for the life of me recall if there has been an Aboriginal AFL/VFL captain before - any thoughts?
