One rule for Lloyd...

Last night's umpiring was the worst I have seen this year.

Not only did Hird and Lucus get special treatment, but the umpirining department's love affair with Matthew Loyd continued unabated.

Why is he allowed to take 90 seconds to have a shot at goal when in the same match Luke Ablett lines up a shot from 50 metres and is called to play on after about 15 seconds.

Ablett told the umpire what he was doing and 55m is not beyond him. Had it been Lloyd he would not have been forced to play on.

The AFL needs to sort this out.

I have never witnessed a more incompetent person do their job like BOZO has and get away with it. He has been in charge of the umpires for what, the past 5-6 years? In that time the umpiring has got worst.

Routine or not..its has to be one of the silliest things ever witnessed on a footy field, let alone an indoor football arena.

The umpiring was poor last night but not the worst of the season. The problem they are consistently poor.

The frustrating aspect is the inconsistency in the delivering of the same decision (I.e holding of full forwards, holding the ball etc.). I thought most of Lloyds free kicks were there and yes Leo was holding the jumping BUT.... the problem comes when the same treatment is not applied to any of our forwards. Barry Hall will never get a holding decision.

As for the knee in the back decision at the end of the 3rd qrt. that Lucas received, that may go down as the worst umpiring decision ever!

Never the less, we won despite the umpires...surely Goldspink is circling and pleading to be given a swans game.

Odds on for this Sunday I reckon.

The AFL like they have done with a lot of the problems recently, will not address it and try to spin doctor it. I really haven?t followed a sport where the officials get it wrong every week on a consistent basis. I thought the refs in soccer were bad..sheesh.

Its a big issue atm the umpiring and the AFL fail to see this. They have taken a leaf out of the Eddie McGuire book of how to spin doctor and pull the wool over the punters eyes and make them think everything is ok.

The AFL is a joke atm...but they don't care..it$ all about revenue to them. Typical corporation.

Certainly know what you mean mate and I agree the AFL does seem to sweep it under the rug.

I can't believe I am perhaps about to defend the umps but I think AFL umpiring is certainly the most subjective umpiring in the world when it comes to calling decisions. This comes from the fact having three umpires = different opinions etc. where as soccer, league, union etc have one central umpire / ref.

Also the rules of AFL make it even more subjective. I guess it is one of the attractions of this great game, abusing the umps for the usual crap they dish up.

That's the tragic part - as poor as it was last nite, it would prob wouldn't make our Top 5 Duds for the season.

Anyway, it's our lot, doesnt matter how much we squeal, just gotta live with it apparently.

I was not particularly happy with the umpiring either, especially in the first half, and especially all the frees to the Bombers in their forward line. Are we really that undisciplined in our back line?

I was thinking about the umpires a bit. It occurred to me that the AFL do not put the same level of effort into uncovering umpiring talent as the clubs do when uncovering player talent. What programs exist at junior level to uncover talented umpires?

The umpiring was poor all game for us, but nothing too extraordinary until the Ablet 'shot at goal'

He TOLD the ump he was having a shot and pointed his finger towards the goals to indicate as well.

Did the umpire thing he couldn't make the distance?
If it was Rocca there would have been a lot more allowance made I would think.

Perhaps the umps need to research player abilities a bit more.

McLaren actually told a player last week "You cant make it from there." I cant remember who, and he WAS right, but still...

The decisions that pissed me off:
1. The Lucas "ITB" ruling, where all four players involved were looking at the ball and there were no hands in the back. The only reason Leo didn't mark it was a last second punch by Goodes out of his hands. Even Wallsy said that if thats the new rule, Jesalenko was lucky he wasn't playing in this era.

2. The Leo Barry HTB decision. Sure he tucked it under his arm and used the other to fend off the second tackler, but to say he had "prior opportunity" in the millisecond before he got crunched by two tacklers is ridiculous. It was his reputation for taking on tacklers that "earned" him that free, and Bazza and he continue to be punished more heavily than other players in the comp because of their ability to break tackles at other times.

3. The Crouch 50m penalty. Stupid.

Luke Ball, IIRC. The thing is, even if he doesn't make that distance regularly, I'm sure that he has before and very well may again. The umpires should not be adjudicating based on perceived talent (although they already do so in a sense with deliberate OOB)

Why was wrong with that? It was stupid by Crouch, not the umpire. He wasn't in the contest, and held the player up, which would have been okay if he didn't take him to ground. The Essendon player may not have put up much resistance to falling, but the onus lies with Crouch if he comes into the contest late.

It was as clear as crystal in the Crouchy 50 that the guy was playing on...it should have been holding the ball in my opinion. What are you supposed to do when a guy takes a mark and keeps running towards the goals - let him go...? It was an absolutely crap decision.

Esp. when Walls questioned how long Lucas took over a shot at goal earlier in the game.
