The whole of 1996
For a team who hadn't been competitive in 10 years this was amazing. We used to be happy if we kicked a goal. Euphoric if we won a quarter and if we won a game ...well we weren't sure what to do because we just didn't do it that often.
We broke a whole bunch of records during the year and defeated teams we hadn't in 10 years.
Every week was magic. Beating Carlton at Princess, obviously the full house against the Cats, Roosy's 300th, smashing Richmond and Plugger kicking his 100th.
It was also the fact that we were playing like a top side - expecting to win and doing so.
And how could I forget the game against Richmond in Round 4. We were 1-2 and the wheels were falling off. Playing it at Waverly.
Richmond had made the final four the year previously and were a decent side.
In a cold, wet close scoring game we were down 61-40 and 3/4 time. After kicking 5 goals in three quarters we kicked 5 in the last to win by a single point.
Can't not bring up the brain explosion by Richo who took out Dunks as a Chris Naish kick was sailing between the goals. The umpires paid a free and the goal was cancelled.
Rocket was down by the boundary barking instructions because the phones were broken.
But 1996 was the beginning of Sydney accepting the Swans and the South Melbourne fans accepting Sydney.
Also happened that Super League was taking place which just happened to give Swans and AFL in Sydney extra exposure.
Last game of 1995
Who knows how much of what happened in 1996 had to do with the seeds sown in Round 22, 1995.
This was the equation - beat Collingwood and they are out of the finals, Brisbane make the finals for the first ever time and we lose our priority-pick. Lose and we keep it.
It was Ronald Barassi's last game as coach.
Collingwood were all over us but we fought back in the third-quarter and were just two goals down heading into the last quarter of the year.
A combination of Craig Kelly holding Plugger well and poor disposal to the big fella' was frustrating him, the side and the fans but in the final stanza things clicked and we exploded for an
eight goal quarter.
Derek Kickett was inspirational and did things only he could do.
Paul Kelly was playing the final game in a super year of football which would see him win the Brownlow medal.
Afterwards we all ran onto the field. It was a special day.
2003 Qualifying Final
Go to Adelaide and beat a side who has been the best for the last two years. Defeat them on a ground where we don't play that well and they haven't lost a game since Jesus played back pocket for Bethlehem.
Our intensity was such as I have rarely seen. We would have beaten anyone that day.
Already had a bunch of guys out injured and then lost a few more during the game. Courage and bravery the likes of which had to be seen to be believed.
Not only did we win where no one in the world and many of our own fans did not give us a chance but we had earnt the week off. Not only that we had earned a home preliminary final.
Other notables:
Defeating North in 1999 by 2 points in the 'Battle of Sydney'.
Warwick Capper's Friday night marks
Rod Carter's goal
Plugger kicking 16 against Fitzroy in 1995
