    The whole of 1996
For a team who hadn't been competitive in 10 years this was amazing. We used to be happy if we kicked a goal. Euphoric if we won a quarter and if we won a game ...well we weren't sure what to do because we just didn't do it that often.

We broke a whole bunch of records during the year and defeated teams we hadn't in 10 years.

Every week was magic. Beating Carlton at Princess, obviously the full house against the Cats, Roosy's 300th, smashing Richmond and Plugger kicking his 100th.

It was also the fact that we were playing like a top side - expecting to win and doing so.

And how could I forget the game against Richmond in Round 4. We were 1-2 and the wheels were falling off. Playing it at Waverly.

Richmond had made the final four the year previously and were a decent side.

In a cold, wet close scoring game we were down 61-40 and 3/4 time. After kicking 5 goals in three quarters we kicked 5 in the last to win by a single point.

Can't not bring up the brain explosion by Richo who took out Dunks as a Chris Naish kick was sailing between the goals. The umpires paid a free and the goal was cancelled.

Rocket was down by the boundary barking instructions because the phones were broken.

But 1996 was the beginning of Sydney accepting the Swans and the South Melbourne fans accepting Sydney.

Also happened that Super League was taking place which just happened to give Swans and AFL in Sydney extra exposure.

    Last game of 1995

Who knows how much of what happened in 1996 had to do with the seeds sown in Round 22, 1995.

This was the equation - beat Collingwood and they are out of the finals, Brisbane make the finals for the first ever time and we lose our priority-pick. Lose and we keep it.

It was Ronald Barassi's last game as coach.

Collingwood were all over us but we fought back in the third-quarter and were just two goals down heading into the last quarter of the year.

A combination of Craig Kelly holding Plugger well and poor disposal to the big fella' was frustrating him, the side and the fans but in the final stanza things clicked and we exploded for an
    eight goal quarter.

Derek Kickett was inspirational and did things only he could do.

Paul Kelly was playing the final game in a super year of football which would see him win the Brownlow medal.

Afterwards we all ran onto the field. It was a special day.

    2003 Qualifying Final

Go to Adelaide and beat a side who has been the best for the last two years. Defeat them on a ground where we don't play that well and they haven't lost a game since Jesus played back pocket for Bethlehem.

Our intensity was such as I have rarely seen. We would have beaten anyone that day.

Already had a bunch of guys out injured and then lost a few more during the game. Courage and bravery the likes of which had to be seen to be believed.

Not only did we win where no one in the world and many of our own fans did not give us a chance but we had earnt the week off. Not only that we had earned a home preliminary final.

    Other notables:
Defeating North in 1999 by 2 points in the 'Battle of Sydney'.
    Warwick Capper's Friday night marks
    Rod Carter's goal
Plugger kicking 16 against Fitzroy in 1995
    1996 PF

      2) Plugger's inspirational 3rd quarter (in respect of his injured mate PK) where he kicked 5 straight, I think, most from around or outside the 50, to turn a close game around against the Power.
Yeah i think he might have actually kicked 6 in the 3rd qtr. Ended up with a dozen. One of the best individual performances I've ever seen.

      My Top Ten.

      1. 96 Prelim
      2. Locketts' 1300th
      3. 2003 QF (So great to be there)
      4. Rd 13 '96 against Carlton
      5. Plugger's 16 against Fitzroy in '95
      6 Roosy's 300th
      7. Rd 4 '96 against Richmond
      8. Kel's inspirational goal against North in '99
      9. Rd 11 '98 against Hawthorn, Lockett kicks 6 in the last qtr and we run away with the game.
      10. Our only win of '93 against the dees.

        To add to those mentioned (2 recent ones);
        * Andrew Schauble running off the bench at the SCG to a great reception for his first game in 2004 (who knew only a year later...)
        * Nick Davis kicking a long goal to seal the match against Collingwood at Telstra Dome in 2003
I knew him as a gentle young man, I cannot say for sure the reasons for his decline
We watched him fade before our very eyes, and years before his time

Another good one was the final against the Sainters in 00 (I think! Anyone?) where we won by 2 points and it rained cats and dogs.

            Cressa's knee
            Pluggers point
            and
Rod Carters one and only goal

                It was 1998 - Roosy's 355th game.

                I'm on the Chandwagon!!!

If you cannot compete for the premiership, it's better to be young and exciting than middle-aged and dowdy.

the ones mentioned are great ones - but the roos game on a sat night in '01 - with robbie ahmat's goal a special one - especially as I was sitting near some real arrogant roos fan who would not shut up - until half time and he got quieter and quieter and slinked off mid 4th qtr to a lot of smug smiles.
but what about that freo game on '00 - when the keystone cops donned freo and swans jerseys - you had to laugh in the end - sooo awful!
the carlton game at the scg in '00 where we had next to no chance but pulled it off.
can you pull one or two moments of PK brilliance out from the rest?
c'mon wazza's speccy over langford deserves a mention

Kelly switching play in the '96 prelim, to gives us another goal (which might have tied the game??)

Lockett Crunching Cavens nose into the SFS.

Creswells Mark and goal at the end of the game against Hawks in 1st final '96.

                    Creswells Dive/Free against the Kangas.

Kellys individual effort against the Roos, to shrug off a couple of tackles and goal (was the the same game as above).

Comeback against the Dees in 2003.

Comeback against the Lions in 2005.

Wiping the floor with the lions in 2005.

Even though we lost the game, the 1996 GF is still a magical memory for me - just the atmosphere around town on the Friday with all sorts of people wishing us well as we wandered around Melbourne wearing Swans gear, the buzz around the ground before the game, watching the Wayne Carey doll collapse during the pre-game entertainment, even standing in a pub on Clarendon St into the late hours of the night after the game, drowning our sorrows and with 'Cheer Cheer' breaking out sporadically around the pub.

Twas a bittersweet weekend, but a memory that I wouldn't be without for anything.

You left out, Plugger "sprinting" down the wing knocking/paddling the ball forward, with seconds to go. The entire two teams were in Richmonds F50.

I think it was the hardest Plugger had run in his life.

Another one, which is more a moment where I remember personally being extrememly excited, was being at Kardinia Park for the final round in 2000, we weren't going to make the finals but I am pretty sure Geelong needed the win to make then. Paul Kelly obviously had it in for the Cats and I remember the excitement of standing up as he had a shot on the run from a long way out right at the death of the game. A goal would have won it for us, he didn't get it but while the ball was in the air I thought he was going to do it and winning that game seemed to mean everything, although someone did point out that we would need good luck getting out of Geelong alive if he kicked it.
