He spins the "we don't know much about that because we are in Sydney" nonsense quite a bit but it's just another method of avoiding the issue at hand.
Well, that's a faily mischievous reading of it.

"I don't think the umpiring has taken away from the spectacle of the game," he said.

"It is hard to comment from Sydney because, as we know, there is not as much publicity up here about the umpires in the AFL.

"Maybe some of the coaches or fans or players in Melbourne might think so, but certainly from our vantage point up here, it is business as usual."

It seems pretty clear from that he's talking about "publicity up here" - ie, Sydney. Melbournites might be cranky & complaining about the footy but he's not aware if that's the case in Sydney coz it doesn't get the same airplay. Pretty damn reasonable position to me.

And yes thx, I am aware one can get Internet access in Sydney. That doesn't make it any easier to get non-existing info about what Sydney AFL fans think vis-a-vis umpiring/spectacle.

You miss my point. There is no "up here" in media terms (unless he is referring to AM radio perhaps). Every piece of Fox Footy is broadcast into Sydney and every paper is available (a lot of articles are available online). He was merely using the us/them spin to avoid having to comment.

And I think you miss mine. They were asking Roos about the situation with regards Sydney - they didn't need to ask Roos to comment on what is happening in Melbourne coz, as you have noted, that is pretty bloody self-evident & presumably they are just as capable of reading the media as Roos is.

But he couldnt comment on the situation in Sydney coz he just doesn't know. There's buggerall publicity about AFL in Sydney no matter whether the source is FF, the Age or the Epoch Times.

Personally, the umpiring has detracted from the spectacle of watching the Swans for me this season (as my wife often tells me) but I can't speak for the other 30+K that attend each week coz I simply don't know - & pretty reasonably, Roosy says he doesn't either.

And 5% of the people get Fox Footy? I don't. And I read the Hun and Age on-line but only the sport section. If I didn't follow the Swans, I wouldn't. So, as a Herald reader I'd say that 4WDrivers feeling picked upon is a bigger story than what some guy said on a flight ex Perth. I've never seen Eddie on TV except when I've recorded Friday night games - no Millionaire, no Logies, no Footy Show (well I've seen it 3 times and the Swans were ignored even when that was match of the round).

I'm very aware of the umpiring controversy but I'd be hard pressed to find a Sydney friend that does. So, Like Paul Roos and NOG, I'd say that on this issue, we're in a different world from wherever Saints fans live. (And I thought the Saints seemed to get a better run with umpiring on Friday than we often do, anyway.)

And I still think this whole issue is largely Ch9 showing the AFL what can happen if TV rights move to 7 and 10. Don't mess with Kerry and think you'll have an easy life.

If Roos doesn't have Fox Footy I'll eat my own **** while standing totally naked in parliament house.

it's not the same. you are talking about active media exposure : when people seek out the articles and material that interests them. that is pretty much the same everywhere in australia.

what is hugely different up here is that we don't have the saturation of our passive media exposure (newspaper posters, headlines in other people's papers on the train, lead story ads for tv news, background sound in pubs, shops and taxis, general conversation, etcetera) that exists in the southern cities with football.

AFL issues in general can be the only issue of the day in melbourne, but not get mentioned once around the water-cooler in sydney. reading an article once in the morning is one thing, but to be reminded of it 5-20 times over the day is what makes it stick in your mind and what makes it a huge issue for the public.
then again, i think it would be worth trying 15-16 players on field so what would i know

                From the Bladder:

"The AFL umpiring world was a world of backward running, whistle-blowers in shock today after the umpire at the centre of the QF648 storm apologised to flight attendant Melanie Victory."
