I don't think NOG is the sort of guy who would care one way or the other.

      The club said this?

Stuff them! As long as what's on the banner doesn't effect their public image, they have absolutely no say on what goes on there.

I'd do it anyway. What are they going to do about it?

We never really found out who said it Denise did try to phone Tony Morwood for confirmation but couldn't contact him so rang Cathy Marney who said the club decided at the beginning of the year that 50 games was not to be acknowledged

Stupid Idea if you ask me!!

Any milestone is important. I think it's nice to celebrate a 50th game. Pity it can't be on the banner.

Considering 50 games wont even get your son into the team under father-son, I can understand why the club would say that.

Who in God's name gave them the right?

Banners have always represented the fans - not the club itself. It has always been something that fans do as a (token) way to show their respect and loyalty to the players. Hence the focus on milestones.

Of course, banners have with time come to be associated with the club itself, hence the imperative that banner messages don't affect the club's image with the AFL, other clubs, media and general public. When a message doesn't affect that image, however, they have absolutely no place deciding what can and can't be on there.

                    Micromanagement gone mad.

Putting all of the technicalities of your argument, whether it is right or wrong, aside, wouldn't it be fair to say that the whole tradition of banners still relies on a healthy relationship with the club?

The issues of good taste, public image and acceptable celebration are one for negotiation between the banner-makers and the club I would have thought. And the club does hold some sort of power over it all, as it can "grant" access to the ground only to an acceptable group no?

I would have thought these measures would be a means by which to control extreme behaviour (whilst extremely unlikely anyway). A banner celebrating something unsavoury, or crossing the line in terms of barbs aimed at other teams or the AFL, can be "vetoed".

The club (and I mean the "club" which includes all of us supporters too BTW) has its image reflected in the banners. To this end the club (of players and admin staff) still needs to have a say in the message.

Agree to all of the above... but seriously, if you think that congratulating Nog on 50 hard-earned games (let's face it, it's bloody hard to get to 50 games in this outfit) is 'extreme or unsavoury', I want what you're on.

As I said. Micromanagement on a ridiculous scale. Someone in the head office needs to find something more important to do.

You probably deserve it on a banner for 50 games of junior football.

I wouldn't have thought that it would be all that great a milestone to a player.

I would expect every Swans player to be able to accumulate 50 games.
