It does make me wonder what sort of Risk Assessment (qualitative or quantitative) is produced for player trading by teams, and the level it goes down to... and who has to sign off/accept the risk? Just Andrew Ireland, or does a big trade need to go higher?

Is there anyone else here that couldn't give a rats about Aker, umpires or what Eddie may say tonight? That's for the Melbourne-centric who don't have anything else to think about (except what team in the bottom of the eight might have a chance - or medical reports on the Saints).

We're playing finals in a pretty good position. That's worth discussing.

I just called an AFL-hating friend to see if I could score a ticket for the Club Champion dinner. She's looking for it for me but when I asked if she wanted to come, too she asked if the players would be in their tight shirts and shorts? Her interested waned when I said she'd have the rare thrill of seeing Baz in a tie.

On the Aker issue, we could wait and see who doesn't perform well in finals and consider trading them? After all, the next few weeks are what the whole season is about.

I'm surprised you guys up there have even heard of Aker.

I wouldn't trade anyone for Aker (not even Maxy). He would just be another one of the former-stars-who-failed-at-Sydney (Banner at 5 games).

What I would trade for Aker would depend on what footy cards I'm missing.

Or one of those stars who continues to star (and plays 50 more games!).

Aker is a deadset genius and I think he may have quite a few more games in him. Aker getting the ball and bombing it into Baz sounds like a delight to watch. But I think the Swans may be one team that shouldn't take him. Roos has done a great job (probably possible only in Syd or Bris) of melding a complete team that plays as a single organism (when it's on song - late 2003 and late 2005). Aker needs the limelight and that could break the structure.

Also, he's said how he is underpaid in Brisbane. I bet he's want a lot to move.

Maybe Kossi would be a better bet?

Presuming Doyle won't come good we have to think of replacing Ball (unless Goodes is to take 50% of the rucking?)

Youse are dreamin' mate. I wish the RWO drafting page had the age of draftees listed for background to this issue.

Course you'd take an Aker - he is one of the stars of the competition & has had one of his best seasons this year.

But he's cried "wolf" once to often on this - no credibility in trading stakes I think.

The measure of a player's star-quality and mental toughness is how he goes in a team that is absolutely getting flogged.

Based on what I saw in R20, Aker = star.

Trusting that ugg is right, we've done okay (but not brilliantly) in the last 10 years in the 'matoor' players we've picked up in trades (ignoring the draft). You take yr Nick Daffys and Simon Hawkings with yr Paul Williams, Barry Halls and Jason Balls.

While he wasn't worth Shannon Grant (and isn't retrospect a wonderful thing?), Schwatta was an excellent pick-up, and of course we don't know if there was some motivation/intra-club politics issue that meant that Grant would never have reached his peak in Sydney (see: A. Rocca).

I think Aker, provided he passed a medical and could fit in with the team, would be a great pick-up.

(PS Granting that the draft is a crapshoot, trading for a draft pick with Sydney seems like the way to get lucky: Brisbane got Simon Black with our pick 31, Freo got Adam McPhee with our pick 39, the Saints got Nick dal Santo with our #13, WCE got Darren Glass with our #11 (admittedly, that one's solid but not spectacular) and Collingwood got Leon Davis with our #34.)

Given his ego, I dont think desire would be an issue with Aker. Probably the opposite, i.e., he would likely play one season too long before retiring sometime in his 30s.

If Ball and Maxfield both retire, i think definitely we have room to for a genuinely good mature-aged player without unbalancing our age structure.

We could then use William off the half back (hello mr Mathews and play Aker as the playmaker in the midfield.
