Just watched it again - amazing last quarter

I just watched the last quarter again and it's fantastic on replay!

Kirk early and Buchanan later were outstanding in the last quarter at finally being able to gather the ball cleanly and get it forward. Crouch continued his hard work too.

Ball was really good in the ruck - constantly gave us a chance.

    Davis' goals were sublime.

The first was brilliant - his ability to read the ruck tap, run off the pack and curl it in for a goal (similar to the first qtr which just missed).

His second was an excellent mark from a long kick from O'Keefe. Good piece of play from the backline and good to get it in quick but not a great kick to advantage. Yet, Davis held off Corey and Hunt, took a tough mark and then went back and under enormous pressure calmly slotted it through.

The third goal was sublime. No one else in our side would be capable of doing that (except Williams in his prime). Again cleverly reading the ball in the pack, running past Kennelly to accept the handball, having the pace and strength to push off two chasing Geelong players, and then able to kick it around the corner from 40m with Geelong players just about to hit him. Unbelievable!

The fourth goal came from a combination of skill, awareness and good discipline by the Swans. You could see Ball, Ablett and a couple of others call for the area to be cleared, and thankfully everyone did. This left a nice gap in front of the goal, which Ball beautifully tapped to. Watching Davis in slow-mo from behind the goals, you can see how well he timed his run, wiped his defensive man off on a screen from a Swans player, thus letting him run through unchecked. The ability to still get a boot to the ball despite the pressure was amazing.

Just worth watching over and over again!!

There was about three cats trailing from behind, plus another sort of coming in from the side but he'd timed it so well that they were all ineffective. Bomber Thompson would be livid with how they positioned themselves. It is a magnificent goal - not only the way he set it up but the fact that he never took possession and you'd expect most players to kick it OOB or through for a behind. The control he had was amazing.

The other goals were sensational too, like you said. He was 2 on 1 for the mark, and the snaps never looked like missing.

One crazy quarter of footy that's for sure.

I haven't been able to post after being totally gutted being live at Subi last week - psychologically I couldn't deal with footy.

Last night was a salvation for me - what an unbelievable finish. I've now watched the replay twice!! Marched home triumphantly from the SCG to catch the replay last night, then again this morning watched the last quarter.

Nice summary Bloods - another who was excellent for us in that last qr was Jude (nws that kick that went astray). Did some amazing work at the stoppages.

        Anyway, I'm back!!

          That last rumble!!:

          1. Ablett's clever punch around the corner and Johnson to keep it in
          2. Bazza's strong work to keep it to our advantage with the toe poke back to the goal square.
          3. The tackle from Leo on G Abllet as he picked up the ball, causing a spill to our advantage
          4. ROK with the strength to carry four Cats players 5m closer to goal.
          5. That unbelievable tap from Ball, straight into Davis' arms
          6. The miraculous kick out of the air!!!!

I have watched the last 15min about 8 times now!! Still get a tear in the eye as it unfolds. God the crowd noise!!

              The Age -

Davis said with the Swans kicking only two goals in the first half, the forwards "copped a bit of a spray at halftime".

The ex-Magpie had another reason to try harder after he "lost" his opponent David Johnson who kicked a vital goal early in the last quarter.

"(Sydney leader) Brett Kirk came over and said: `You owe us one (goal).' I got four so it wasn't too bad," grinned Davis.

"The only difference is Plugger's (point) got us into a grand final. We've still got two games to go," said Davis, 25.

Need to add that our nemesis Mr Goldspink blew time off immediately, which as it turned out was the vital few seconds we needed. As far as the noise it was right up there with the 96 final thats for certain.

Far be it for me to raise this with you but Schnieder's tremedous spoil on the Brewongle wing in the last quarter is also worth a comment. Made up two yards with tired legs on one of the Cat speedsters (can't recall exactly who), got a clean punch to the ball without infringing and put it over the line to lock the ball out of their forward line. The young bloke just gets better in regard to the one percent efforts every game

I just watched the last quarter again too - I didn't bother rewinding the tape all the way to the beginning, though

Noticed a lot of good things - while it still wasn't a great performance, it was a victory for persistence. They actually started to do a few things right, like intelligent tap-ons, and got a bit of run going - the break-out that led to Davis' mark inside 50 against 2 cats was the best play of the game!

The Cats definitely went too defensive too early, after they got the first goal of the last quarter there were still 18 minutes of game time left and they did not score after that, and it cost them the match. They followed their game plan to shut us down almost to perfection - but couldn't keep it up for the whole game.

Did the Cats choke? If so, it's ironic, given I'm inclined to think we choked last week against the Weagles (think about it - O'Loughlin easy miss in the third, Kennelly bad miss in the last, blazing away when no-one was there to take a mark except Cox...)

This was a great effort at a critical time. IIRC it was just about the only really good thing he did.

Bit harsh. There were a few nice touches, including an intelligent kick to the top of the goal square earlyish in the final term that Jude got his hands on but just couldn't bring down.

Schneider missed some tackles as did the other Swans smalls. Geelong seemed to be tackling many times better than we did!

My tape has just disintegrated!!!!!!!!!! I'll have to watch the AFL.com when it is released now. At least they offer it quarter by quarter so I'll just keep watching the fourth over and over and over.
