    Trading this year

Just so we don't get to carried away this year with talk of trading players for draft picks etc, I would like to inform the board of a conversation I had with Kevin Sheahan last week at a lunch I attended.

For those not aware who Kevin Sheahan is, he is the AFL Junior Development Officer and the most authoritive figure on junior talent in Australia.

Kevin left me in no doubt that this years draft will be one of the most thinist he has seen in the last 10 years.

He also commented that the current batch of Under 16's Australia wide was the best in recent memory and that next years draft was going to be a bottler.

He suggested that many clubs would only delist the minimum and in alot of cases would re draft their delistings.

So based on the above can't see us trading for picks or players this year.

So why not trade player for player?

its pretty hard these days as i think clubs over value the players they want to trade and nothing ever gets agreed upon.

I've got no problem tanking next year for priority picks if we win the flag in 2 weeks time.

I hear that we might get good value from a young kid H.James we could probably draft in the 3rd round in this year's draft.

No doubt (as the supporters do too) but no harm in trying.

I have no issue trading player for player this year, but with the draft so thin other clubs are going to want to extract a special deal this year.

The only decent trade doing the rounds this year looks like Carlton off loading a key forward (Fev or Lance).

West Coast may be interested in trading one of their 6 midfielders (Fletcher maybe) for a key forward but we are unlikely to be able to weasle into this deal somehow.

We maybe able to extract some sort of value out of Saddington, but what we get would probably be a hail mary midfielder (like Spriggs) or a 30+ midfielder that maybe past their best.

Just can't see us trading player for player and definately not player for picks this year.

No trading this year then. Mature our list, pick up a few speculatory picks and move on.

By itself "thinist" means nothing, but when something is "most thinist" then that is the most thinist thing you will ever see, unless it is side on, and then I doubt you will see it at all.

Generally true, but what is Collingwood now thinking about N. Davis? If we can do that kind of deal I'm in favour.
He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. (John Updike, seeing Josh Kennedy in a crystal ball)

Every draft in recent memory has been labelled "thin" or "weak".
