If I was in Melbourne, or able to get to Melb, I would be at the game. Since I can't and will be watching it on tele anyway, I don't really feel like I'm missing out on anything other then a good nights' sleep

As Mel says, it's not quite the same as watching it on a big screen... But a handheld telly would certainly beat just listening to it on a radio!!!!

As for myself, I'm planning a big night of hilarity in our home theatre with about 10-15 friends. Even though it is just on TV, the atmosphere ain't too bad if there are 10 people packed inside a small room 5m x 3m. Our screen is not quite the 3.5m level of Mel's, but I reckon our 2m screen goes alright (esp with our freshly calibrated CRT projector!!)

177th Senior AFL Match - Round 4, 2009 - Sydney vs Carlton, SCG. This is obviously out of date. I suppose I'll update it once I could be bothered sitting down with the fixture and working it out....

If the unspeakable happens, do you pack up and go home or stay for tickets?

It won't happen! But if it all does come crashing down, I'll be going home to bed - or drown my sorrows.

And no, my 3.5m TV is not a hand-held lol. That one is well and truly secured to the wall (and sometimes it gives you head-spins watch the footy when the camera follows the flight of the ball!). The hand-held is 3.5Cms. A slight difference.

I did it in 1996 and it only cost $150 for a ticket which was only $70 over the face value. Seems like $70 well spent as opposed to missing the prelim and then camping out all night.
Interesting modus operandi Humphrey! I adoptd the same apprach at the Sydney Olympics. I picked events I wanted to see d without fail there was always a person there wanting to offload tickets they didn't want, 99% of the time at face value too.

I sold a ticket for the football as well at face value. No securty staff member or anybody hassled me at all.

I'm told scalping is not as 'legit' in Melbourne as it is allowed to be up here. I got into the 1991 NSWRL GF on what I swear was a fake ticket.

And essendon supporter mate of mine went down in 2000 and got in at half time for free after these blokes walked out! He got back in, had awesome seats and saw the win!

Another trick is to get tickets off ppl who only want to see the under 18's (or whatever the pre match games are). They go to watch their sons/friends/family member then leave. I know a few people who have tried this successully in years gone by.

If we're in, I'll go down for the GF even if I havent secured tickets this weekend. As JF and others have said, chances are you will be able to find tickets. I simply will not miss being inside the MCG on 24 September if Sydney are playing.
