Just back from a very enjoyable day at the International Rules Carnival.

East Coast Eagles were unlucky to lose in extra time in the decider to GAA team Michael Cusacks. The Sydney AFL teams put in credible performances throughout the day.

A very good hit out for all 12 teams concerned.

Many thanks to the NSW GAA for orchestrating the day's events - they have an excellent set-up at Auburn. They did all the umpiring, set-up of field, BBG & canteen facilities all day long. Well done.

If ye are doing nothing on a Sunday during winter I recommend a trip there & see Gaelic Football (mens & ladies), Hurling & Camogie - 6 matches every Sunday April-August.

Recommend the day as a permanent fixture in the pre-season calendar for all Aussie Rules teams (akin to the 20/20 concept with cricket).

Glad you enjoyed yourself Rafters-you obviously bought some sunscreen with you!!A darker shade of red i haven't seen,my face looks like a Sherrin!!!But what a great day, that was some extremely fast footy we played yesterday. And playing 2 games back-to-back twice didnt help-apologies to our last opponent, who we had to forfeit against, but we'd already played 4 games to their 2,so it wasn't going to happen.Well done Irish on organising the day,ii agree with Rafters,it should happen every year(although i'm sure Balmain will disagree,i do hope the young fella injured makes a quick recovery)but all AFL teams can learn a thing or two from the carnival. Also, many thanks to the SouthWest Sydney and Penrith boys for helping us out with numbers, great to see unity between old rivals.

Pekay, I feel your pain about being sunburnt. I can hardly move, never been so burnt in my life.
Thanks to all you AFL teams for coming out and giving it a go.

Is there any results up somewhere from the day? My mail was that everyone really enjoyed the day. Perhaps this could be a concept that can last. A day like this each year could generate some good interest.

Umm, no - I have a Sherrin face today as well. Gone through all of summer without any sunburn ... then the first weekend of Autumn - go figure!

As for results, Irish may be able to provide them. The Wollongong Lions results were:

                    Penrith Gaels 1-8-1 (31) v Wollongong Lions 2-3-5 (26)
                    Yound Irelands 1-2-4 (16) v Wollongong Lions 0-4-6 (18)
                    Michael Cusacks 1-8-3 (33) v Wollongong Lions 2-5-3 (30)

The Lions were way behind the eightball by halftime of the first match & almost stole a victory with a strong 2nd half. They beat the defending GAA premiers in the 2nd match before scaring the bejesus out of Cusacks in a highscoring game. As the final scores indicate, the aussies struggled with accuracy in front of goal whilst the Irish struggled with the tackle rule.

East Coast Eagles won their 3 round robin games with the final game being 9-7 against Irish Rovers. No other AFL team won a game on the day.

                    Semi-finals :

East Coast by plenty against Penrith Gaels
                    Michael Cusacks 2-4-1 (25) v Clan Na Gael 3-2-0 (24)

                    Final (in extra time):

                    Michael Cusacks 2-1-2 (17) v East Coast Eagles 1-2-3 (15)

Scores were level at 14 all after normal time. A golden 2 point rule applied ... ECE scored a behind in the first minute of extra time but Cusacks got the vital over to win the day.

No injuries of note to the Wollongong squad. One Balmain player did some srious damage to knee/leg in a dubious challenge which resulted in a sending off. Balmain went home in protest right there & then which was a bit disappointing, but I didn't see the challenge & perhaps unfair to comment.

Has anyone got any information on the Balmain walk off? From the matches I saw the games were played hard but in good spirits. The irish boys seemed a bit upset by some of the tackling but took it like men. From what I hear the same cannot be said about the Balmain boys.

From what i can gather Balmain withdrew from the comp after some over the top unsporting behaviour from one irish team (allegedly)
Does anyone know the which Irish team it was?? I only spent about 5 minutes all day at the second pitch as I was too busy to keep an eye on the first one.

Incident happened in the 2nd half of their game against Penrith Gaels. I was busy warming up the Lions for the match following it so didn't see what happened.

I think it was an off-the-ball incident which caused the injury (& subsequent walk-off) ... I understand that there was a bit of niggle leading up to it though.

That said, the day was played in the right spirit for the majority involved. The Lions are already looking forward to next year's event. Bring it on!

One of Balmains players had their Knee deliberatly disloacted in a far behind the play incident.
