    Young I heart,

Not one of the players you mentioned would be top 5 at your club in the past 15 years- maybe Abbott for longevity.

A certain newsreader off channel 10 (not Gull!)

O'Dwyer, Kerr, Roberts to name a few

I took the purpose of this thread akin to the term champion ... someone than is great over a career not just a year or two.

Clifty had one great year when he kicked a ton ... but he wasn't the one guy that the coach devised a game plan year in year out.

Joey Cormack played well in his Phelan (and premiership) year but didn't standout that much in other years as an ex-AFL footballer probably should have - love ya Joey though mate. Mick Partridge was probably the best ruck rover that I have played with/against & top bloke to match but Sydney footy only got to see him for 1 and bit years with Parra and 3 years with Wests.

And yes I rate Bartlett very highly ... very very unlucky to miss out with the Swans (and other AFL clubs) because of one perception. Has tremendous ability & already won 2 senior club B & Fs at the age of 19. But he needs to prove himself over 10-12 years.

I was going to ask someone how good the Sanson boys were when they were up here.

Timba has been at Lavington in the Ovens and Murray I believe since he left Wests (about 93?) and has coached them since 1996 - he is now their longest serving and most successful coach with two premierships (2001, 2005) and two grand finals (1996, 1998) and has been one of the best centre half forwards ever to play in the Ovens and Murray league, although he has drifted down to full forward more lately as he pushes through his mid-30s.

Mark (Bug) Sanson also joined Lavi and was a sensational player as well and could kick big bags of goals up forward or give nothing away in defence before a serious car accident about five years ago left him with serious neck and knee injuries.
He got over them and returned to the team, but was never the same and is now doing an excellent job coaching Henty in the Hume league.

Paul (Cec) is the third brother and is an outstanding attacking key defender with a booming kick - he is pretty much to Lavi what Leo Barry is to the Swans, and can also go forward and kick bags if required.

Brett (Boxhead) is the youngest and is also a terrific talent, although a serious knee injury curtailed him this year, he is probably a similar style of player to Mark and also can run through the middle when required - although not often because Lavington's midfield is one of the best in country footy.

All are outstanding players, and unless I'm mistaken, all played together in the 2001 premiership.

Can anyone expand on that from their Western Suburbs days?
"It's up to the rest of the players in the room to make a new batch of premiership players next year," Adam Goodes, triple Bob Skilton Medallist, October 7, 2011.

I heard that O'Dwyer was a great player but a little bit soft. and Brett Roberts would be the best player I have seen for a while in the Bulldogs strip....a supurb player, athlete and good bloke.

              Certainly was!

However, a statement a large majority of you will not comprehend is that you do not need to be tough to be a great footballer.

Thats why a sport such as boxing exist

It an issue in Sydney footy as most coaches and supporters reward toughness . Consequently, a reason why the skill level is so poor.

So he could in fact of been a great player but a bit soft, O'Dwyer that is. Brett Roberts is as hard as nails and your right, has terrible skills (obviously due to being rewarded for his toughness).

Adam Coles is a freak of a footballer, still was considered good enough to play Premier Div last year(year before) but chose to have fun in 2nd division. Nice bloke, hard as nails as well.

Sorry, this one has me kerfuffled..... how do you figure that>What do you define as toughness??This is the one sport where toughness(or G & D as i like to call it)is paramount. You can dance around packs all day n night, but only tough players will put their heads over the ball, or back in to a pack, with blatant disregard for their own safety. Seagulls ALWAYS get found out....funnily enough by players with "toughness"

Pekay and Ash I tend to agree with both of you here.

Ash however boxing is as much a mind sport as it is a brutal one. I have trained to fight and love the sport. It is one of the best ways you can get fit and it really tests your ability to think.

Pekay seagulls will always have a place in footy. A team needs receivers who can carry the ball and set up attacks. This doesnt mean they are scared to run into packs but merely not suited sometimes. Not everyone has the ability to extract the footy.

To me a complete footballer is one who has the skills to make things look easy yet never shirks the issue. A bloke who will run straight at the footy not the man and a bloke who will stand under a high ball knowing their coming but never giving an inch.

Toughness on a football field isnt defined by how hard you hit people but by the courgage and intensity by which someone plays the game.
