    Sydney International Rules 2007 - Sunday 4 March 2007

Sydney AFL clubs will compete with local based Gaelic Football sides in the 2nd Sydney International Rules Competition on Sunday 4th March at Princes Park, Auburn. This year the teams will be playing for The Mick Raftery Cup.

Following from the success of the inaugural competition last year, this is a great day for clubs that are looking to kickstart their 2007 seasons by competing in the 15-a side round ball compromised rules tourney.

The competition is sure to be played in a competitive but very friendly spirit and be a great format in which the players can hone their skills & coaches can give untried players & those that trained hard a go.

Basic format of the day would look like something like this:

    - 3 round robin matches to determine top 2 sides in each group
    - 10 minute breaks between rounds
    - Top 2 sides of each group play-off in semi-finals (at the same time to avoid any advantage)

Good luck to all clubs involved in this great initiative.

    Group A (Princes Park)
    Nor-West Jets
    Aussie Rovers
    Cormac McAnallens
    Young Irelands

    Group B (Peter Hislop)

    Parramatta Goannas
    Michael Cusacks
    Clan Na Gael
    Penrith

Venue: Princes Park, Chisholm Road, Auburn.

Is there a cover charge? Wouldn't be surprised if the GAA slapped on a charge. They do it for their other games & they considered it last year.

Who are the 'aussie rovers'? Are they AFL or Gaelic players?

And Penrith, is that the Penrith Gaels or Penrith Rams?

GAA haven't charged entry for the past year & not expecting them to do so this weekend.

Aussie Rovers is a combined side of AFL players & Irish Rovers

      Penrith Gaels.

Are you still available for Sunday Irish?

Really? because i'm on the Rovers committee and the president made the call that we weren't playing this year...

There's only 2 AFL teams in it. And neither of them are from the Premier devision. Jeez, it looks like it's going to be very one sided.
No doubt you've seen it's the GAA's way or no way at all. They can be slightly frustrating.

I'm sure i'll wonder down at some stage.

Dunno about the money, but I can confirm Aussie Rovers were a no show today (maybe rooboy was one of em, it would make sense) - and were made up with players from the two Aussie Rules teams that did play - The Nor-West Jets and Holroyd-Parramatta, along with a couple of well known Premier League players who I had the good fortune of finally introducing myself to today and having a good chat with.
Good luck for the season fellas, hope it all goes well for you.

Many thanks to Pekay & the NorWest boys and to Balz & the Goannas ... they tried valiantly but just missed out on the semis. Comac Macanallens were the eventually winners 18-15 v Young Irelands in the final reversing the 16-15 loss earlier in the day to them. Wouldn't be surprised to see a few of the Irish boys play in Blue & White or Blue & Gold later in the year as they were pretty handy footballers & showed an interest in playing AFL!
