    HALL to Coach in 2008

Balmain have announced that Damien Hall will be senior coach again next year. Pretty big call considering they are yet to win a game this year!!! He must be able to talk the talk!!

They would want to hope he is only going to coach and not play.
they will want Fremantle to help them out getting some players from WAFL, and hope they have a big cheque book as the talk is there is plenty of players looking to play elsewhere, give the game up or play another code.
THey dont have any depth as it is, and will struggle more. Real shame as it was a great club.
    Who is the president?

He's one of their best players every week, they need him to play.

But seriously, it's an interesting decision to make this far in advance. They've obviously got a lot of faith in him - and to be fair to Hall he hasn't had the players to work with that some other coaches have had. And he did have some coaching success last year when him and Shearer as joint coaches got St George back into the finals, so he's not a total dud as a coach.
But they'll need to talk some quality players into coming to Drummoyne next year.

maybe shearer can shed some light on to his coaching skills and if he was missed from st george.

since he has left st george, can only say they have got a lot better without him there???

just read the article on the syd afl site.

            what a cracker...

few points: some great signings? when? what money?

fantastic job all year: they lost every game?? structures?? he gets sent off has poor on field leadership and discipline.

best line: purple army.... they have no one supporting them. there president runs water, only fans are generally about 10 parents.

give yole his due he talks, but he just doesnt back it up.

I agree Mahatma, the last two years have been won by teams that didnt finish 1 or 2 in the home and away season. Its a big call to make that St George will win by 6 goals. Althought they dont have a history of choking like East Coast.

Im not saying they wont win because St George definitely look solid everywhere on the park, especially defensively but dont start celebrating just yet Sledge!

Shall be a East Coast VS St George GF, and St George by 6 goals.

I think 'Tall Poppy Syndrome' is alive and well on this forum. I really don't think anyone outside of the Balmain or St George playing group can really comment on whether Hall can coach or not. To be willing to be a Senior Coach in any comp, let alone a 'state' comp (I am using the term loosely BTW) you need to pay a bit of respect to that.

I personally think it is a bit rough how everyone is willing to take pot shots and try and kick Balmain and their coach while there down. I personally hope we do see a much stronger Balmain next year, and that Hall is able to develop their juniors and keep them interested in footy for next yr so they are much more competitive in this comp, as it will simply add to the standard and the respect the comp generates from within and other comps.

All that said I hope Balmain get absolutely @@@@in pumped this week and the big fat flange eating cnt from UNSWES can get a friggin kick for a change.

I agree wit Kef-and not about eating flange.he has one of the hardest jobs there is,its a thankless job and unless ur team is finals bound ya get crucified for it.give him his dues, takes guts to do the senior job.iv lost plenty of sleep being coach-and i'm just div1-so hats off to ya Hally.and this new Mahatma sounds like a breath of fresh air, welcome to the club, and i'm sure we'll meet one day,to gain an insight into ur wheelings and dealings.

Thanks Pekay. One thing I would like to know though, which I have struggled to understand since moving to Sydney, and I am likely to put my head on the chopping block for this, is why don't ALL footballers & coaches in Sydney try and play at the highest standard possible (Prem Div 1)?

I understand people get attached to a club etc, and the spirit of football is you don't leave your mates, but I cannot for the life of me understand why people who have obvious football ability (coaching, or playing) don't attempt to play or contribute at the highest possible standard. My only assumption can be that they obviously don't have the confidence, or they like to be a big fish in a small pond.

This is obviously going to get a few people worked up on here, and this is certainly not designed to do so. But for my 2 cents worth I think the entire comps credibility will benefit significantly if the SFL can be more aggressive in encouraging all 1st div and 2nd div footballers to play football at the highest level their ability allows them. The Canberra competition has taken the approach that all 3rds and 4ths (as they are known in Canberra and the equivalant of 1st div and 2nd div) have affiliate clubs that are playing in the highest grade to give the talented players a straight pathway to the top. Pls excuse my naivety if this is already the case for the SFL, but I really think blokes like Pekay who sound like they love the game and live for the game and have something to offer should be making a direct contribution to our league at the highest possible standard.

Sorry Pekay, this is not designed to be a direct attack on you, it is just something I would like to get an explanation on, as I think it is an obvious area of improvement for the comp as a whole.

Coming from the Canberra AFL, when I tell my mates about the SFL and how I am personally going, they just laugh and tell me I am playing in a sht comp anyway and I should stick to eating pies (yes, I am LL). I know and everyone on here knows this is a bull@@@@ perspective, but we need to do something about this and change it.

Rooboy, can you shed any light on this?
