Just briefly, trouble was always brewing with one side intent on trying to unsettle the other (no probs there...had to try something) It wasn't working as Uni just wanted to play footy. Plenty of umpire abuse from the Power bench (I was sitting in the seats behind). SP player gets yellow carded at northern end and gives the finger to the crowd for 50 metres on way off field. Last quarter it is just a biffathon. Two players (SP) get red carded for brawling/punching. Coach gives the high fives when they come off field. Brawl breaks out near SP bench (urged on by support staff) Red carded player runs onto field and joins in. Umpires call game at about 9 minute mark. SP leave field through tunnel yelling obscenies and fingering crowd. They don't stay for presentation. Someone must have spoken to them as they came back when presentation almost over.
      That's just briefly !

If that?s an accurate report as to what happened (or even close to), the administration of that club should be bloody ashamed. If the coach was high fiving an under age kid for being sent off he should also be banned from coaching any junior football for 20 years.

cartman48 A Balmain Div 2 player was reported three time against us and managed just 4 weeks total suspension despite a head but and leaving the bench after a red card to get involved in another fight so yes I don't believe the AFL is doing all they can to clean up all levels of the game!

People in glass houses!!!! Seems cartman48 has gone very quite since his last remark!!! But that would be justified...From my initial findings this @@@@ sure club has obviously been lacking success for a long time for obvious reasons. After talking to people associated within,,it seems that while they have the current, coaches and committee that they do nothing will change!!! Word was that they were just thrown together and no-one has any respect for one another down there or more obvious any disipline...

Congrats to Uni on their win. At least they went out to play footy.
thats the worst thing i've heard they may as well have forefeited if that was their intention

i saw the fracard, would have to say poor management unprofessionalism is a lacking factor at this club they need a good kick up the bum...i really hope that the leauge have a look at this event and punish the players and coach involved and make an example of them as to say this is wat can happen.
well done to sydney uni winning a one sided comp. pretty poor effort by southern sharks.

What about the league for having Syd Uni in that comp anyway? Everyone knew that the "Collingwood Project" was going to roll any side in that comp by 100+ points. What a joke!

yeh its a bit poor and the leauge have put in place new zoning laws for season 2010 for that very reason bert. how ever it is a bit of a joke. but good luck to syd uni for being the first ones to think of such a scheme and i guess they got wat they were after a flag.

Shine maybe you should meet the boys at the Power before passing judgement - I can say after close to twenty years of playing against them they are in general a great bunch and those in charge this year from Bill down would certainly not be happy.

Perhaps you should ask the question why was a player who has been red carded allowed to sit on the bench and not behind the fence?

Congratulations to SU though on their win.

to tell you the truth tara i know a few of the power boys and grew up with them and played a lot of junior footy with and against them for a local club the bangor tigers. so im not judgin them with out knowing them
i also know that they are not ussually like this however im judging them in this instance on today performance.
as for y the player was left on the bench and not sittin sepperate from the team eg on the time keepers bench is that i believe that the umpires had lost control of the game. i thought the umpires who i believe to be 17 were well out of there depth and a senior umpire should have taken control of the grandfinal.

I think that needs to be remembered in all of this.

How the Power behaved today was a disgrace. But let's at least acknowledge what helped cause the frustration in the first place.

They went to the ground today knowing they were up against virtually an elite/development junior squad who they would be lucky to get within 10 goals of.

A squad which farcically was put in the Sydney AFL Challenge Cup competition, up against suburban sides like the Power, or clubs taking the time and effort to field second sides (eg Penno).

So when these Power kids started looking at the inevitable 100 point thrashing (which they probably knew was coming even before they got there today) some of them cracked. The behaviour of those on the bench seemingly just made things worse - they should have been making sure all the kids stayed under control and took the loss on the chin without resorting to the tactics they did.

Remember also that the Power got slaughtered in the Under 18 GF last year by an equally strong side that probably shouldn't have been there either. So today was also on top of that and frankly you wouldn't blame kids who played in either or both years' sides for being completely disillusioned with the game and the body that runs it.

How the Power as a club behaved today was indefensible and I hope suitable punishment is dished out (and not just to the reported players either). But I don't think for one second it should be suggested that it was because of a cultural problem within the club or because they were getting beaten. It is far from that simple.

Essentially the Sydney Uni club had an Under 18 premiership handed to it on a platter, which no doubt contributed indirectly to today's sorry events. From being able to recruit from other clubs' areas, to having a virtual development/elite squad aligned to it, to being put in the Challenge Cup competition. The whole episode has done nothing for the development of true competition at the Under 18 level, where equality of competition is vital.

Tough to blame the umpires but I can see why an 18's GF should be handled by more senior umps. Actually was the same umpire as at Henson Park with the Dockers on the day this thread started. The kid is a good umpire and did well during the season to be awarded a grand final.
Power actually put together some great passages of play on the occasions they wanted to play footy. Pity the coach didn't let them show their talents on the big day.

I'm not going to comment either on Southern Power's behaviour or Sydney Uni being in Challenge Cup, but I will defend the umpires in this game.
I'm usually quite happy to hand criticism to the umpires where it is due, but I certainly didn't think they lost control of the game at any stage.
I thought they handled the odd spotfire that flared in the third quarter fairly well, and they would have been told at three quarter time to do everything they could to knock anything unsavoury on the head.
They did this by issuing two red cards (one by each umpire and only about 30 seconds apart in different positions on the ground) and when that still didn't ease the situation they called the game off.
I've never seen a match abandoned for this reason in more than 20 years of watching football, and while I was surprised to see it happen today, when I think about it I can't see what else they could have done.
"It's up to the rest of the players in the room to make a new batch of premiership players next year," Adam Goodes, triple Bob Skilton Medallist, October 7, 2011.

congrats to all the teams that won today very well deserved. not trying to take away form the winners but i thnk the umpiring in general today was well below standard for grand finals. i was sitting next to acouplr of power 2nd div players and while they were not going for the bats(steaming after last weekend) they were also commenting on how poor the umpiring was to both sides. hopefully next weekend the standard is lifted a bit. and the game today was at blacktown not henson like stated!!!!!
