I came from the East Sydney side of things and of course we were always in Premier Div.

Cum the merger, the Div.1 side was effectively the best of the Bulldogs reserves and the best of the UNSW guys.

That's all changed now, it's every team on its merits...can only be healthy.

With this structure, as opposed to the Vic. one, if a club's reserve grade side is too weak for Div 1, they don't stay there purely because their first grade is going alright.

I can't see much wrong with that...it means every club has to look after its top 50, which in turn provides first grade depth.

It also gives other clubs like UTS and Norwest a chance to aim high.

Norwest don't have to aim high as ECE look after that for them(sorry should say the "alliance").

They are the only club that didn't one a flag & got promoted.
But we at UTS have won the past 3 & they still wont put us up to Premier division.

sorry JYD meant PREMIER DIVISION, UNSW were back in the SFA 8 years ago, lets not get to defensive, I wasnt actualy haveing a go at anyone, just a little bit a trivia. Unless we are refering to the bulldogs part of UNSW then I know its a different story.

Could someone answer a question for me please.
Why couldnt NSW AFL just have named Premier Div, 1st div and so on and so forth.
Is it a vanity haveing a lend thing.
Do we realy have a Premier Division of football. Would calling the top division of football in NSW 1st Division give a stigma that is not wanted?

The comp is about the equivalent standard of Reserve Grade country Victoria.
Every comp in Australia should have a grading - similar to horse racing I guess.

At least then if you went to another state, you would haave a good idea at which level of club to approach.

Lending myself to the horse racing example:
                Group 1 - AFL
Group 2 - VFL, SANFL, WAFL
Group 3 - NTFL, AFL Canberra, Riverina, AFLQ, Metro Melbourne and some regional Vic comps, SANFL reserves.
Open - Sydney AFL Premier, Riverina Reserves,......
Class 5 - Sydney AFL Div 1.......and on and on and on......

down to Maiden Class which would probably be PK chasing Doormat round the field on his crutches.

You obviously dont keep up with the standards of all these leagues. The Rfl is not as strong as Sydney and hasnt been for at least two or three years. Wouldnt think that Canberra is on par with the Qafl or Metro Melb and some Vic Country. Our Rep side Has flogged Rfl last time we played and beaten Canberra and only lost by a goal the previous meeting, not saying the whole comp is as strong but the top sides would compete as we showed in the late 90s when it was also a much stronger comp. Wagga Tigers had dominated the Rfl for years and i dont think they even played finals in Canberra
The edge is not the limit, It's just the starting point...

If our league is that low, we punch above our weight in rep games. Beat AFL Canberra last start, and only lost to the Victorian Ammos by a kick last year.

Perhaps by Riverina he meant Ovens & Murray, arguably the strongest country comp in Australia. Saying that, Canberra people like to think their league is on par with that. Goulburn Valley is up there. Geelong FL as well. Maybe the unemployed football guru Doormat can enlighten us, or is he too busy poring thru inside footy for a job?

The only reason we are competitive in rep games is because the top echelon at each club is quite good, its the players from 7-22 that are embarrassing to watch on main event every friday night! Therefore when you take the top 5 or 6 players from the top clubs it makes for a pretty competitive outfits against the much better leagues...

Throw in a good coach & enough said!!
