RWO Game Day Thread - Round 1 - April 6-7

Finally the pre-season is done. It's a great time of year, optimism is rising high as clubs assess their recruiting and their pre-season training. And this is what they've trained for - the footy action is ready to go.
Good luck to everyone for the season.

If there are any late ground closures or fixture changes, please post them on this thread. Also any game day information.
If your club is having a promotion, such as a past players day or ladies day or a function, give yourself a plug on here.

And if you have any comments or thoughts from any games you've played in, coached or watched, tell us about them on here. If you're into the tweet, join the conversation at #AFLSydney

If you played, coached, umpired or watched any games this weekend, what were your thoughts? How's the standard of play? How's your team shaping up?

There's still a long way to go this season. But looking at the around the grounds scores, a couple of games that I'd expected to be blowouts turned out to be quite competitive.

Bit like Jurassic Park this weekend, with PK and S Kassem getting amongst the goals yesterday, and Kippa running out today. I see that Noordhoff played for Wests - he's been around for many years hasn't he.
Like PK says, these guys might not be getting a game if it wasn't for divisionalisation - I'm sure that the physio's of Sydney are indebted to Garry Burkinshaw for generating customers for them !

See that North Shore ran all over Penno after half time. I called in for a while and they were devastating with their ball movement. Get a few lazy shillings on them as premiership contenders based on what I saw.

You'd have to say that Manly beating Balmain by 20 goals was something of a shock.....

Nah balmain a joke, whoever is running club should question themselves. Losing that many players always going to hurt, the ones who stayed would question why, the ones who came in likely wont be there next year

I think everyone involved in Sydney Football has been saying that for years about their club. Everyone who has been involved in the club in any way shape or form in the past 5 years knows who are cause of its current state. It is just too bad that they had an opportunity two years ago with a general manager who was turning the corner for them, and a good list with a great coach, but wasted it all and will struggle to field a reserve grade team for the rest of the season. There won't be a Balmain in 2 years time is my prediction.

It would be a tragedy for the game if such a proud club was lost to the game.

Surely you can't have them at Henson and SU at their spiritual home and expect them to survive.

Only way I can see is for them to start again completely

                - Start playing a Drummoyne again (surely they have a right to play there)
                - Get rid of that godawful Dockers tag (what idiot dreamed that alliance up) and go back to the Tiges
                - Concentrate all their investment on junior development not mercenaries
                - Build a winning, inclusive culture throughout the club
                - Re-engage and bring back the multitude of good clubmen to the fold that they have disenfranchised recently
                - Be financially responsible

hate to say it but reckon they are too far gone....

I'm shocked at that Balmain v Manly score. We all knew Balmain lost a hell of a lot of good cattle during the off-season; but I thought they still had enough left to be competitive.

So, where were Manly predicted to finish the season?? I would think they would finish in the bottom few in their first season?? If that is the case, Balmain can expect some record breaking losses this season against the likes of Easts and Norths.....if Manly get can get up by 100+, can we expect 300+ margins against the bigger teams?? That is not a good look for Sydney footy

Tub, I think anyone who had seen Manly over the last couple of years would have been quietly confident that they'd be competitive. I'd give it a couple of weeks to get a more accurate picture, although no one would have predicted that result.

Correct. Manly would have been competitive in Premier Division last season with the list they had, add to that a handful of quality players and I think the prediction of them finishing last or second last was a bit naive. Manly will finish 6th this season.
In every game there is going to be a cross-road, and when you get to that cross-road you either step up, or you step down!

Only time will tell of course but I'd think that the result was more of a reflection on how bad the Tigers are rather than Manly. Reality will hit when they play North Shore and Pennant Hills.

I think they will be competitive and could well finish above 2-3 teams. Long term they should be fine, they have a strong, progressive junior club and are an area that always attracts inter-staters. For too long they have been held back due to North Shore's self interest.

I think the quality is poorer but I like the fact that clubs like Manly and UTS can come up and be competitive whilst essentially staying amateur. Perhaps the NEAFL is good in that it takes out the guys that deserve to be paid and leaves the remaining clubs as amateurs. It's impossible to enforce but SYdney footy would be a lot healthier if it was amateur I believe. Perhaps this will open up the reality of genuine promotion and relegation which I think would be brilliant
