    Game Day - Round 6 Post-Mortem

Could have sworn I'd put the fixtures up, but doesn't look like I did. Sorry about that - hope you all got to your grounds OK.

Any thoughts on the games you saw/played in/coached/etc in?

I watched the Wolves v Baulko match at Weldon and have the following observations

      * Weldon is now a SFL ground surface wise but the venue is still very SFA. Nice little club rooms for the Wolves but overall the ground is very cramped with poor viewing spots. Not that it matters too much for SFL I guess....

      * Wolves clearly have some quality but look like a bunch of kids compared to the SFL teams of old, totally confirms my view that the current SFL is the new SFA. Whilst I believe they may have beaten the Robbo-led team of the 90s (think Hogarth, Anderson brothers and Crombach in their prime) I honestly do not think their would be much in it. The fact they went from SFA champs to SFL champs with basically the same team says it all really.

      * It was nice to see a game of AFL where players still held their positions and it wasn't a rugby game.

      * Baulko's ressies playing SFL are not senior standard (unlike Sydney Uni who are clearly attracting some serious talent through their scholarship programmes) - I spoke to a number of Baulko supporters at the match and I can assure you they do not like the NEAFL at all. When asked what they think of it the words "politics" and "it's destroying our club" were muttered. It has clearly fractured their club and if they are not careful they will have a shell of what they had a few years ago. IU would not rule them out dropping down a division next year whatever their NEAFL results are, then again I don't think the rank and file who I spoke to get a vote on that.....

      * Giants jumpers are innocuous enough in a tacky kind of way but again I ask (1) What does GWS get out of this arrangement apart from ridicule and (2) For Manly what did they get apart from a new set of jumpers and was it worth it?

        So...
        the venue is low grade,
        ground is cramped
        poor viewing spots
Manly are like a bunch of kids
        the SFL is low standard
Manly is no better than 20 years ago
the players still held their positions (what sort of outdated remark is THAT ????????)
        Eagles are crap,
the Eagles supporters were whingeing to you
Eagles are going to the dogs and may have to drop a division next year because of NEAFL
        Eagles is not democratic
the Giants sponsorship has been a waste of time.

Sounds like you had a depressing day, Mug. But, oh well, at least you can take some positives from the day.....no, wait.......apart from the playing surface and the nice little clubrooms, it was ALL a bit of a misery, wasn't it.

To the contrary I had an enjoyable day watching some decent park footy, just being honest with my assessments. Manly are a good side and have some decent kids in there, which is understandable as they have a great junior setup, but the decline in SFL standard is pretty self-evident.

This is just my personal view but I think that the NEAFL has had a hugely detrimental effect on the SFL. It used to be a league to aspire to play in whereas now it is a league to decide the third best team in Sydney. I think that is a shame, again just my personal opinion.

Justa and Barista are clearly johnny-come-latelys to the Sydney football scene so I'd like to open up the comments for what other knowledgeable people think with my poll.

Typical kneejerk reactions from the usual suspects whenever I make a comment (yawn....)

It's the sort of comment that MANY people are saying about our great game. That is has become a hybrid game of rugby and basketball that bears little resemblance to the game they grew up with.

I had an Old Boys footy reunion in Melbourne last weekend, we watched Carl-Coll/Hawks-Saints/Bombers-Scray over the course of the weekend (I couldn't make it to the Hawks v Cats main game, as I had left Punt Rd and headed back to the hotel to sleep off the mother of all hangovers, but that's just me getting old) and the footy, frankly bored the hell out of me. Resembled donut soccer, 30 odd people around the ball, and the whole lot of them just moved with it. No positional play, no one-on-one footy, just the press, the zone, the flood. Whatever its bloody called these days. It's the last game of footy I'll go and watch live, was a carbon copy of the last game and the next game. Boring. Call me non progressive, but I hate modern football.

Oh Pekay do stop being so outdated.....

For all the posturing by blokes like Clarko, who I thought was going to jizz himself on AFL 360 a few weeks ago talking about the modern game, I don't know one genuine fan of the game who enjoys the ruck and maul that is modern footy.

I'd hate to see the game over-governed and would resist the use of zoning (like in netball) but I genuinely think the following four tweaks (and that is all they are) would go a long way

                    (1) For a mark to be paid the ball must travel forwards
                    (2) Distance for a mark to be paid to be increased to 30m
                    (3) Extended bench with 3 interchange and 5 replacements
                    (4) Number of interchanges to be limited to 60 per game and limited to breaks in play after goals are scored. Any sub outside of goal breaks to be benched for a minimum of 10 minutes
