Thanks Saviour. I realise it's a low comp, but you would be surprised how competitive it is and some exciting games are played. From your experience, what's it like watching your team go down by 20 goals?

I know how competitive it is, I won it in 2012.

Never fun losing, but beating top of div 1 by 10 goals makes up for it. And sending you down to div 2 by 10 goals at greygums was pretty decent too.

17 posts and I haven't rated a mention yet. A mix of pride and disappointment.

Jaret Hogarth wins hands down. Massive wanker.

Without a shadow of doubt one of the biggest knobs in recent Sydney AFL history, a flat track bully who bagged 100 goal seasons against players inferior to him and went missing regularly in the big finals matches at SFA level, Sydney Uni in particular seemed to have the wood on him.

His election into the NSWAFL Hall of Fame when he never had the guts to test himself in the senior division is an absolute disgrace, and he would have been towelled up at SFL make no mistake.

I mean how many blokes are in the AFL Hall of Fame because they won multiple awards in the Reserves but refused to play in the seniors.

What about NSW/ACT AFL themselves who financially bailed out East Coast this year so they can continue to pay a group of firsts team players that are 10 goals better than any other Prem Div team? At the same time they let other clubs struggle. How does that rate?

Andrew, any idea how much the AFL threw at East Coast to bail them out this year (to fund their new range of match day gear) ?

Or let one of their employees almost singlehandedly destroy a proud club with over 100 years history (Balmain) in a couple of years.

NSWAFL incompetence is more than worthy of its own thread

I'm not really sure as the AFL are trying to keep it very quiet but in excess of $100k is the figure being thrown around. And they've got 10 years to pay it back.
I wonder how quickly they would pay it back if they were excluded from the finals until the debt was paid back?

How would you feel if you were from Campbelltown reading that ECE have been basically gifted $100K whilst they were left to wither on the vine?

I know I have at times been critical of the Uni Club but you have to admit they seem to have got the right model up and running for the NEAFL

They have a very strong sponsor in their Sports Union who effectively bankroll the operation and provide the scholarships etc as well as administration resources. And they have a culture of inclusiveness that provides a huge membership base. They really have become the benchmark of football in Sydney.

I wouldn't imagine anyone who knows would share it but but I'd be curious to know what the NEAFL Campaign costs Uni and what AFL subsidies they get for it. Travel costs aside, and you'd hop they are covered by the NEAFL, you'd think that side alone would be a $200K exercise minimum once you'd factored in coaching, admin and scholarships. That's a lot of coin and no district club will ever be as stupid as ECE and think they can attempt that ever again.

Apologies for the positive post in this thread

I'm sorry. I really cannot believe the SydneyAFL have bailed out ECE with a $100k loan. Not a team that received grants to play in a higher league. Not a team which is having a stellar of a season with many of their NEAFL players. I just don't believe it.

I believe the NEAFL plays travel costs for the players & coach; but the club has to pay for everyone else.

But the other costs are significant, and rising. I heard that the NEAFL for this year ruled that physios weren't enough and that it was compulsory to have a doctor for every game; and that was the straw that broke the camel's back for East Coast.
Without knowing for sure, I'd imagine there were players already contracted on significant coin before they pulled out of the NEAFL, and the loan was so those contracts would be honoured.

When I've got a bit more time I'll move the posts about East Coast's financial dealings to a new thread; so we can get back to naming flogs.

I couldn't say for sure but I think the traveling party for NEAFL is 32 which includes the 23 players, a few coaches plus physios and a manager/admin. Might be a couple more or less but I'm not sure of the specifics.

Have no idea about the Doctor requirement - we may have one at each game, I don't know. But I don't think so. Unless the great Tom Ayton counts as one? Ha ha.

Nice of you to say those things, MP. I'd love to answer your questions but it's not really appropriate for me to do so - plus I don't know what the exact figures are as that's kept pretty confidential.

But you're right, SUSF are fantastic for us - they provide us with staff, facilities, scholarships etc and without them we would be nowhere near where we are today. All we need from them now is to boot rugby off No.1 from next year onward now that they'll have their new venue up and running. Won't hold my breath though!
