The decision was more or less forced on East Sydney by the league's "stupid" idea to allow the Swans reserves into the comp. That brainwave lasted a year before the Swans left for the ACTAFL, yet the Sydney AFL declared Trumper unacceptable as a Premier grade ground along with demands relating to monetary turnover. We weren't "taken over" and it's easy to look back in hindsight. The move led to back-to-back flags in Premier grade 2002/03 and a twos flag.
That statement looks pretty damn stupid when you consider that UTS now play our of Trumper for PD doesn't it.

Whether it takes you longer is not really relevant is it?Comment

Fair call, what I meant is that the impact that matters in this is for the UNSW players that need to drive an extra 100km per week, I hope seagull has plenty of demerit points in hand given it's only going to take him half an hourComment

Pekay, it was a decision forced upon the Bulldogs by the University that seems more interested in building flats for wealthy Asian students than Aussie Rules at present.
As I understand it, they require the VG for 2016 as a construction base. There has been no cricket there either!
Every other ground was accounted for...particularly with juniors commitments.
Bit harsh that another scribe would prefer to troll on here instead of seeking the facts.
I don't speak for the club but the boys are grinning and bearing it.
On a good day, it'd be less than half an hour on the M5 from Todman Ave.
You can only do so much I guess mate. Spare green space down your way would be like rocking horse droppings.
Are you still involved?Comment

Will the Sydney AFL be putting out a Record this year ? It's mid-afternoon Friday and nothing on line yet.Comment

Mug Punter, I never said it was "worth two flags." I merely pointed out it was hardly a failure two years later.
I know a bit about this as I was there! I was one of the Easts players faced with an unfortunate choice foisted upon us by a blinded league which mistakenly thought it was part of the big time.
You don't seem to be listening. Had we not merged, we would have been punted to the SFA by the league which did not rate Trumper as a Premier grade ground, with the Swans reserves playing in the comp.
The Bulldogs have had a couple of lean years but won the SFL flag four years ago and their twos made the GF a year later. All teams go through a slump but you are already dancing on our graves. Maybe when UTS win a few more Premier grade flags, your statement might not sound so hollow but the E-S in UNSW-ES stands for Eastern Suburbs and it's extremely well regarded by all and sundry at Kensington.

Not playing or coaching anymore as I have moved to the Central Coast. But I'm a life member and will get to a few games this year. Are you helping out with the Jets still?Comment

And I know that hindsight is a great thing but would have being "punted to the SFA" such a crime? Seems pretty precious to me, I'd prefer my club to have an identity personally.. especially as UTS now play our of Trumper. You'd have come down and wiped the SFA and made the NSWAFL seem like the idiots they are.
That whole thing was a takeover and the guys who had the upper hand (UNSW) really were pretty incompetent, like most Uni clubs in their admin (Sydney Uni being the obvious exception).
Anyway, it's too late now anyway. I'd actually like to see Newtown try and get their seniors up and running again out of Erko if they could. The demographics of that area are way way different to what they were when they folded in the early 80s, it would be a really good story but as it doesn't involve minority racial groups or an area with no interest in football I doubt they'd be interestedLast edited by Mug Punter; 1 April 2016, 09:46 PM.Comment

Hear what you are saying and clearly not in the know (many here would say as usual) but I just find it very sad that effectively East Sydney have been wiped off the map. If it is due to NSWAFL incompetence, and their capacity for that is immense, then it ranks right up there in their stains on the game in Sydney...

"Punted" might have been a bit harsh but so was the threat from the SFL at the time. In my view, Kenny Fowlie and the Uni guys threw us a lifeline. The majority of the Uni boys were not in favour of the merger. We were not thrilled about it either but there weren't too many alternatives. It wasn't just the ground. The league also demanded a huge turnover on the books. Believe me, many of us are still dirty that its dumb experiment lasted all of a year. The Swans reserves regarded the whole league as inferior and took off to Canberra, closely followed by Campbelltown. UNSW-ES celebrates its joint heritage, particularly the 1880 origins of East Sydney/Eastern Suburbs.Comment

Mug and Seagull - I may be a bit slow, but what are both actually arguing over?
UTS, while they play out of Trumper is about as Eastern Suburbs as Brighton, Carlton, Glenelg or Subiaco - where all of their players come from (not a crack at UTS - just the facts). ES/UNSW is the Eastern Suburbs club - its where the best East Juniors go to play (who also play out of Trumper) and the best Maroubra kids go.
Easts is unfortunately going through a period where they are not attracting a lot of Vic / SA / WA players, as they did when they won the flag 4 years ago - BUT - IMO they are following a St George / Penno model of connecting with the local junior clubs. I can ES/UNSW being a powerful club in 5 years when all of those Maroubra kids start coming through and developing. They will then be much more of a true footy club than the come and go players"" at UTS (again to not a Crack but a fact).Comment
