RWO Game Day Thread - Round 1 - April 1-2

The new season is upon us; and we've got the opening round of games this weekend.

The weekly Game Day Thread is for discussion on this weekend's games. If there's any more rain leading to ground closures; or any last-minute fixture changes; please post them on here - and we can do our bit to make sure everyone gets to the right ground at the right time. And if you have any other relevant game-day information, please post here.
And this week, and at any time during the season, if your club has a special event (ladies day, past players day etc); give yourselves a plug! I'm happy for you to use this forum to promote your club's events - maybe we can drum up some numbers for you.

And once the games are run and won, post your thoughts and observations here. If you played, umpired, volunteered or watched any games where something noteworthy happened, tell us about it!

Doing the opening of the new facilities at olds on Saturday. New pitch, new fence, new scoreboard, new posts, new pads, new club rooms, new kitchen, new gym, new roof on the terrace. Few politicians coming down to shake hands and kiss babies.

    Should be a good day.

Didn't see the East Coast v UNSW-ES result coming. The Bulldogs would be very pleasantly surprised with that one.
St George with a strong comeback win at Olds Park. Sydney Uni too good for Wests and UTS a big result at Weldon over Manly.
And plenty of action through the divisions.

Were you at any games today? What were your thoughts? Who's hot & who's not?

Div 4 ECE big win over depleted south west SYDNEY team, Eagals won there first women's game, ECE div 2 great game to watch both teams played great game, prems result the dogs played great and lessons no doubt learnt the competition in prems this season will be closer than most recent seasons, however ... flags aren't won round 1 either. 19's was a good hit out with a first qtr from a strong uni team being the main difference

I only saw u19s and our div 4. Blacktown might be in for a long year in 19s. North shore flogged unsw tho which is a bit surprising.

Blacktown huge improvers in div 4. We were only up by 11 at 3/4 time but big last 1/4. Seems like div 1 and prems had big last quarters too.

I was worried about prems today but a great result with all their recruits.

Did syd uni really play a neafl list?

North Shore won 6 from 7 yesterday, I can tell you the president (and his wallet) got a little bit nervous about the clean sweep round 1

It does seem a bit unfair doesn't it ? Their NEAFL-experienced players were

                    Mitch Thompson
                    Vicic
                    Clarke
                    Kane Murphy
                    Mitch Mahady
                    Osborne
                    Andrew Sierakowski
                    Monty Krochmal
                    Nick Foster

We can leave it to The Student to justify this and I think he would probably say they are all local products or else enrolled at the Uni and that makes them eligible for Prems.
I suppose that, if Baulko is allowed to play all their ex-NEAFL players in Prems, then Sydney Uni has to be given some kind of concession too.

Yeh but we all know how BS it is with Baulko playing their ex neafl players with 400k worth of debt and the sydney afl bailing them out so they can win premierships. Huge asterix created by the sydney afl.

There's also a dozen blokes that went back to other clubs so I'm not sure what we are supposed to do - probably a bit unlucky for Wests that our list has no injuries at the moment but I doubt you'll see a side that top heavy again. All of those guys have played PD at Uni previously - the only one who hadn't was Lucy and he only played because he'd been away for a chunk of the summer and they wanted him to play a couple in PD. The other thing is that the players dropped back hadn't trained once with the PD side all summer, so they were just making it up as they went along.

Don't know about the rest of them, but Monty Krochmal and Vicic were mainly playing Prems last year - may have played a few NEAFL games but wouldn't have been many. But when collating the weekly results for the RWO report (which I'm half-way through doing at the moment for this weekend's games), those names frequently came up in Premier Division last year.

Who cares - R1 off a severely rain interrupted pre-season - will have little bearing on the finals make up ... if SU can field that side every week, they will win the flag by a lap ... they will miss the finals narrowly, of course. Pretty sure ECE lost an early game or two last year. In near perfect conditions at Olds, whilst Saints v Bombers was as tough and contested as any premier division game, and a thriller, the skill errors at times were more like a Div 5 practice match after a big Friday night (to be fair, 30+ minute quarters in the heat were probably a factor too)!
