Going to SFL Match of the round tonight-how about it?

Hi gang, a number of us on RWO has decided to start going to more local footy match in sydney. We have decided to go and have a look at North Shore vs Wests at Henson park tonight from 7pm.

I have started a thread up here in order to attract the attention of those football-lovers in Sydney who are alligned with the Swans but want to do a bit more than just follow footy at the top level.

I'll be there with a couple of footies. If anyone is up for a kick to kick, just come up and say hi.

Let's get the plethora of NSW-based footy fans on Big Footy/RWO start going to watch local games. That is the only way we are going to help the game grow in NSW.

a few of us mamaged to go to the game tonight. Was a treally enjoyable evening. The SFL is well worth a look. Not only was it free to get it, but we could park the car on the half forward line!
We were the last ones out kicking the footies on the oval, so we even helped the AFLNSW take the goalpost padding off the posts. It felt good helping grass roots footy like that.

Henson Park is a venue selected by AFLSydney as a place to hold the match of the round. It was a bit greasy under foot. and it was near impossible to take a mark with the lights in your eyes. But otherwise a fantastic footy venue.

What impressed me the most was the standard of the footy, it was awesome. Really fast breakneck speed stuff, with near impeccable skills in quite difficult conditions. Wests were great, North shore pretty lethargic all night. Wests won by 8 goals odd, to the delight of a decidedly pro-Wests crowd.

Seriously, all you AFL supporters in Sydney, give it a look. You'll be surprised as to the standard. As I was tonight.

PS:- We mused over having a big long RWO fence banner made that we can bring to local matches and hang over the fence.(And of course at least attempt to hang up may on the Doug walters stand at the SCG as well. It would be good to have more grass root NSW footy fans getting involved with RWO. as let's face it, it is really the only forum for AFL Sydney banter and discussion. I have the old Northern Spirit. com.au banner in Norris's car. All we would need is to have printing put on the back of that.

Well done Craig Bolton for getting the co- captaincy in 2008.

Your determination, your tenacity and your under-rated skill is why you have become my favourite player!

It is really good that some people made the effort to go along to Henson Park on Saturday night. The Sydney AFL needs all the support it can get and the local Clubs are always in need of support.
Because the local football is viewed as a significantly inferior "product" to the Swans it is obviously much harder to establish a large following.
The move by the SAFL to showcase games and finals at Henson Park is to be applauded but will only be successful if attendances are better than the usual home and away rounds. If crowds are inferior and all that is being done is creating extra work for the already over burdened volunteer workers at the clubs then this experiment will be doomed to failure along with the North Sydney Oval and Bankstown Oval sojourns.
With a number of games scheduled for Henson and Fox Footy games replayed on Friday nights at 8.30pm it would be terriffic for local supporters to be part of the action.
Red and white online is one of the best mediums to spread the word.

Good work JF - good to see people getting out to SALF games and supporting our local league.
I was at the UNSW/Easts game at Village Green on Saturday which was also of a pretty high standard - mostly from Penno who smashed them by 6 goals - but was a really quick and tough match. Keep getting out there and supporting local footy.

Mate, I'll be there. As long as I have somebody to have a kick to kick with.

It is just nice to watch a good game of footy without barracking for either side. And just clapping good play, of which there was plenty.

I guess I'm getting disillusioned with the "win at all costs but play terrible football" mentality of alot of AFL senior footy these days. Going to a local game you don't get that. Footy is still just a game at this level, not a business heavily influenced by commercial interests and cynical gameplans.

and you can't beat getting in for free. RWOers, lets make more of an effort to get to some local footy.

PS:- It would be nice for the Swans to at least plug the SFL in their Juice Media email thingies. I'd assume that 90% of Swans members wouldn't have even heard of the SFL or the clubs that play in it.
