Big mistake, but I would have put Monty in our top few players.

the much bigger mistake was Roos persisting with Leo on Lloyd after three quick goals.
I know there is a time to persist, but there is also a time to act.

I wouldn't say that leaving Barry on Lloyd cost us the game, but if a change was made, you never know what would have happened.
Maybe Lloyd would have kicked 10 for the quarter, but maybe he would have been kept to 3.
LRT and Bolton aren't just occupying space, perhaps they should have had a go.

For me, the loss was offset by the fact that the Swans are the reigning premiers
I dare say any other losses will be offset the same way

I was extremely dissapointed that Bucky squibed out of the marking contest. Definately not like him to do so.

The question is that is that a one-off occurence, perhaps brought upon by the intensity of the contest, and the lack of preseason time? Or is it a worrying indication that he will have a tendency to continue doing it?

IMO it was a one-off, and certainly not something that I associate with his normal style of play.

Disappointing, yes. But it's not time to stone the guy to death just yet (at least wait until round 3 - if we fall over against Carlton, all bets are off!! )

177th Senior AFL Match - Round 4, 2009 - Sydney vs Carlton, SCG. This is obviously out of date. I suppose I'll update it once I could be bothered sitting down with the fixture and working it out....

Remember he was clobbered from behind sometime last year, unfortunately I think it was an instant reaction.

I'm not sure what the umpire paid, but on replay Monty had a handfull of Lucas' jumper.

calling it squibbing is a bit much. he went up for the mark and just tucked into himself at the very last split-second but was still actually trying to take the ball. i've seen that come off a heap of times. just think of the number of still-photos of contested marks you've seen in which the marker and most other players in the contest have their eyes closed. reflex-protection of the eyes and other parts is almost impossible to supress.

i also thought he might have copped a lamp in the eyes (i don't really know how they're set at telstra dome) which i imagine would perturb most of the armchair heroes here if it was combined with 102 kg of scott lucas bearing down upon them.

i imagine he's not too happy with it but he's one of the most determined players in afl and often the first to put his head over the pill.
then again, i think it would be worth trying 15-16 players on field so what would i know

One doesn't need to do what one expects from others in order to assess whether said others are performing adequately.

If the garbo knocks over your bin and @@@@s on your doorstep, he is doing a poor job regardless of whether you are prepared to do his job yourself.

That's fine, but if you say you'll do that and you weed the garden instead, I reserve the right to criticize you.
