In my opinion throwing oneself to the ground after no or even minimal contact should be a 50 metre penalty. There was one LLoyd free when Barry just stood his ground and Lloyd backed into him, waited for the contact to the back and threw himself to the ground. Not good enough.
A 50 m penalty may not be enough of a deterrent if a player is simulating illegal contact. The umpire is unlikely to catch them out, and even if they do, the umpire has to be SURE before paying this. Otherwise it would be like deliberate out of bounds which is a similar rule breach that is not paid often.

I think the MRP panel should have jurisdiction to penalise players for "simulation". If a player got 50 points for a simulation offence (37.5 after a guilty plea) it would greatly reduce this blight on the game. To be penalised in this way, I think it would have to be a blatant attempt to mislead the umpires, perhaps with additional penalties if it succeeds in milking an unwarranted free. Lloyd's push-in-the-back free after backing into his opponent would be an example of an offence that would be proscribed.

Should staging be penalised by loss of Brownlow eligibility? I think so; the Brownlow is a "best and fairest" award and staging is certainly not a fair way of playing the game. However, loss of Brownlow eligibility for one staging offence would be too harsh. It should be more like a yellow card to Brownlow eligibility - two in one season should be required for a player to lose eligibility for the Brownlow.

I especially like the guilty plea bit. A player who pleads guilty would be admitting to the football world: "I am a stager".

No, I am simply pointing out that if Lloyd is a cheat then Buchanan must be as well.

It drives me nuts when the opposition does it but I would love to have a diver of the class of Lloyd or Wanganeen inside our 50 in the same way as I loved the work of "Scratch" Dunkley and "Morning breath" Carter back in the day.

If there is one thing wrong with Leo Barry's efforts in round one, it is that they lacked in subtlety.
An early nominee for post of the year and the second para about rights and wrongs in particular takes some beating. The fine distinctions, the gleeful language, the mention of pulling leg hairs - all too considered and classy for this site.

But that's my point. Lloyd is always called a cheat here.

That's because he is a professional at it, Buchanan is only an amateur.

in Leo Barrys famous game winning mark, did anyone see Tagh (however you spell it) holding and obstructing the west coast player, clearly a free and maybe a little spot of getting away with something....cheating....I am ALL FOR IT if it wins you grand finals.

Not just Tadhg, LRT wasn't watching the ball either, too busy taking out Seaby and Judd.
He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. (John Updike, seeing Josh Kennedy in a crystal ball)

If it falls on your house you will hear it alright. That is if you are home at the time.

                    Kirk's sprung.

There was a pic in free commuter paper Mx today of Leo Barry with the ball trying to get away from Lloyd, who clearly has his hand over Leo's shoulder holding him.

How can kicking seven goals in 15 minutes in the preliminary final be called cheating? We won that fair and square

I was referring to Barry Hall's 'punch' in that game.

I can't even remember who the crybaby was that Bazza hit!

and yes we did win fair and square by blowing away the pretenders in last quarter.

I despise diving with a buring passion in ALL players!

3 years ago I said I'd never watch Gaelic Football again if it remained as prevalent as it was in that championship. Thankfully it was nipped in the bud.

I despise it! They need to have a penalty for it like in soccer. If Lloyd got to yellow cards and then a red and sent-off for diving that would son knock it in the head!

(Obviously this will never happen and I don't actually recommend bringin in that system - I just really, really hate diving!)
