Yes, you're right in that it relies on who gives the best players for the HS, and I've seen some blokes pop up in the best players that have absolutely blown me away having seen the game).
But by the end of the season it seems to work itself out and the No.1 player on my list wins the medal much more often than not.
In other leagues I do the list in (Coreen and District, Ovens and Murray) the best players are judged by the timekeepers, while in the Sydney AFL they are judged by the club's coaching staff.
Don't know if they are timekeeper best players or journo best players, but in the long run they seem to get it right.
