It was pretty hard for the Swans because Carlton had 18 men in the Swans forward line for most of the night. So realistically we had no free menor free space in the forward line.
Doesn't stop other teams though. I recall our shocking game against StKilda a few years when we drew and we partly blamed StKilda for their terrible flooding. StKilda tried it the following week against Collingwood and were destroyed.
There are ways to beat it, and taking 43 possessions to get it half way isn't it.

When we did chose to move it on more quickly we were unbeatable. I remember LRT finally deciding to to run hard forward rather than the first look to handball backward, and he delivered perfectly to Hall on a lead at half forward. The most frustrating thing was players taking the short chip mark and not looking to move the ball on forward quickly, the first look was sideways or backwards.
It was really disappointing, as per Port last week, the Blues were cherry ripe for a decent loss and through a combination of the effective flood, our lack of confidence to move forward quickly, and some poor checking when the Blues were on the rebound, we damn near lost the game.

That's the key problem. When the players are in this frame of mind that is their first look, hence they miss free players further up field.

exactly..a bit of quick thinking and we play well....its just the younger more inexperienced players ie LRT who seem to overthink plays and slow it down to a stand still...and then watch the errors flow...

LRT plays well when he doesn't have to stop and think about the play. He did this on numerous occassions and looked good on Satuday night. However, when he has a free kick and has to stop and think about it, he looks like a different player completely. I prefer the former.
same, I think LRT plays so well on the run. I am so impressed with how much he has improved....but hes def not alone with the terrible play on a free kick....
Originally posted by Rob-bloods Our kickins versus Port and for some time yesterday are back to our appalling worst.
Against Port they zoned us off and we had no answer whatsoever....reminded me of Eade shortly before he left..once we were caught out we stayed with the same plan and the ball kept bombing back.
Whilst the players are out of touch as a group the tactics are awful, the kickouts are a coaching thing and need to be addressd pronto..
I asked John Longmire this very question at a SARC after-match one day, arguing that I found it bemusing that we never kicked down the guts on the shortest ground in the league, always resorting to playing the defensive huddle out from full back.
Longmire said that they were trying at all costs to avoid the contested possession, saying that we are a poor aerial team (ie meaning our defenders are small and would get outmarked by opponents).
I still think we have been caught on the hop by the new rules & are still playing a style of football unchanged from last year. I hope this doesn't hurt us later in the year.

I've noticed a few times the Dogs will stand a bloke next to the bag of balls when the opposition are getting a set shot and quick as flash, he has the ball in the square looking for a free man. Not sure if we have to go to that extreme but to just maintain the status quo of last year is very short sighted, particularly in a game like last Sat. where we need to do a Noah.
It doesn't help that our no.1 kickout man (Kenelly) is out, last year he didn't miss a minute all year I think, and Schneids doesn't seem as confident to kick to a positive attacking position, and then run on to create the extra man needed to get over the 'flood' of opposition players around half back.
I hear not what you say, for the thunder of who you are.

Half the problem is we have a kickout man. With the quick kick in rule anyone should be able to grab the ball and find someone in the open.
And quite honestly, Kennelly's kick-in ability is hardly so great that most players can't replicate it.

The rule is definitely designed for the nearest player to get things going ASAP, a couple of times on the weekend one bloke would grap the pill, then drop it in the goal square for Schneider to come from wherever he may have been, how long do you think before some kind of time limit from when the behind is registered, rather than from when the defender has the ball in the square?

It probably has slowed a bit compared to the pre-season but plenty of teams are going the quick option, always to the free man.
"It's one thing having the ball there, but are you kicking to a contest or are you kicking to a free player? I think everyone seems to have taken a deep breath since the early rounds of the pre-season."
This is rediculous, no team has or will take a quick ball to a contest. Some teams may have taken a short gasp but definately not a deep breath.
Agree with his comments on the rules, we've got more uncontested end to end football, that's about it.
