Because they don't care. Sydney are the reigning premiers and have always been the team the media turns to for flooding bashing. Honestly, there are plenty of teams that do it, but nobody seems to take notice.

As for last night, we flooded... Carlton ultra flooded. The reason for the 'boring chipping game' everyone is critisising us about is because we had no space to move forward into, so we chipped around until that appeared.

Had we just gone long and bombed it in, we would have lost that game.

Liz you really have to live down here in Melbourne for 6 months to understand this huge dislike Melbourne has for anything Sydney, including the footy team. Last years GF was evidence. Instead of making it a Sydney Vs West Coast Grand Final, the HUN decided that South Melbourne was playing, not sydney and did their best to not mention sydney once but rather the swans or the bloods or just South Melbourne. Even Bob Davis didn't mention Sydney in his "lets hope he doesnt have south melbourne wait another 72 years for the flag" speech.

I just can't believe how many people down here are baliming the swans for flooding yet not one mention of the amount of numbers Carlton had in thier back 50. Or the amount of players Pagan put on Hall.

All this is missed while they critices the swans for ruining "their" game.

By midway through the second term, when the Swans were leading by four goals, they should have been 10 goals ahead, considering they were dominating possession by two to one. But they could not find a passage to goal through their congested forward line.

Indeed, the Blues were flooding in such great numbers that, midway through the second quarter, when Nick Stevens mongrelled a kick from centre half-back in the direction of the Carlton goals, teammate Brendan Fevola fought a losing battle against not just one Swan, but five. There was not a single Carlton player within 30 metres.

But while this mega-flood characterised the first half, the second half evolved into a tense contest that could have gone either way, with the Blues storming back from a 30-point deficit. It wasn't attractive, with mistakes on both sides, but that was its charm. At least there were contests.

And that article saw the game for what it was: Sydney desparate to win, and doing so at all costs. And that Carlton was ultra-defensive and we still had significant skill errors that left the door open for them.

Not sure it was just Sydney's errors that left the door open (and in any case, I thought the skills were of a reasonable level last night, especially the kicking - it was some of the decision making that was cringeworthy).

It was Carlton's comprehensive smashing of Sydney at centre clearances in the second half that got them back into the game.

But most Melbournites on this board insist that the Sydney Melbourne rivalry really only exists in the minds of Sydneysiders.

I must admit, coming from overseas, I don't really get this mutual dislike thing between Australia's two biggest cities, whether it is in the past or still alive and kicking.

If you want to see an example of media bias, this time from the itself, go to the AFL.com gameday newsdesk and watch the four quarter summaries. You would be excused for thinking Carlton was playing an intra-club game.

Carlton supporter rang up 3AW about 11pm to say that Sydney was not the culprit. He said for much of the game Carlton had 16 players in defence.

I disagrre with another poster who said if went long we would have lost. If we went long Carlton would have panicked.

Our problem was when we were clear running down the wings we went sideways to contests rather than get it in quick to our forwards one out.

Nick Davis must think he is a leper. How often he made space yet was ignored by the waxing midfield, who eventually kicked to a crowded half forward line. Why we dont kick it to the top the square quickly staggers me. Maybe when it eventually comes together that will follow, but you wouldn't want to be hanging by your neck waiting for that to happen.

Its just Melbourne being grumpy. They dislike Adelaide people and Sydneysiders. I am sure if Brisbanes border and Perths border were close to Victorian, Melbourne would hate them too.

I don't understand it myself. Most Melbourne people think that Sydneysiders care enough about them when the reality is Sydneysiders don't really care!

Next time your in Melbourne let a stranger know you are from sidders and check out the reaction.

Mostly it is a media beat up between Melbourne and Sydney, but Croweaters generally dont have a nice word to say about us.

Carlton was certainly the main instigator behind flooding and they only gave themselves a proper chance of winning once they stopped this tactic. Sydney had a spare man in defence and used him better in terms of running the ball but the forward 50 was too congested to allow free scoring.

BTW the Melbourne/Sydney rivalry is historical and the principal reason why Canberra is the national capital but I would have thought that most people these days are a tad over it. It can be media driven at times though.
