Are there some mathematical implications here? Does Willoughby have to be twice as good to wear 14? Was Kels only 66.6% as good as Leo? Is Crouchy twice as good as Kels was? But wait! Where does that leave BBBBH? Surely he's more than one 14th as good as Kels or Skilts!

But I think 14 is more than just a number, it has a reputation that must be fulfilled. Think how much flak Matthews has gotten because he "took" Plugger's number 4.
Those who have the greatest power to hurt us are those we love.

I reckon they should give it to LRT. And yes, I'm being serious.

          My rationale is:

          - he's not a midfielder so any comparisons with Kelly and Skilton are meaningless. He's not expected to become like them in any respect.

          - regardless of whether he improves, stays at his current level, or sinks into oblivion, he already represents part of the history and evolution of our club, albeit in a different way to Kelly and Skilton. By that I mean he is a product of the interaction between club and city - ie a boy who grew up playing rugby and then switched. The way he has already achieved what he has achieved, through ups, downs and perserverence, in many ways mirrors the evolution of the Swans.

          - notwithstanding the above, he is still young enough to forge a career wearing the number, and to add to its history in his own way. If he's not good enough, so be it. But if he does kick on to become a long term decent player for the Swans, he will become a noticeable entry in the list of players to have played for the club.

I don't think anyone expects he is going to become an out and out superstar, so giving it to him shouldn't carry that weight of expectations that giving it to a young, highly fancied draft pick might. But just to cement the CHF position for the next 8 or so years would be a decent achievement - and one that is not beyond him.

I agree with the comments of others that it's just a number and shouldn't be that big a deal. Unfortunately it has become a bigger deal than it needed to, simply because it's been retired for so long. Giving it to someone like LRT for the reasons given above, is a way to get out of the hole that has been created.

                Hopefully Keiran Jack

I hope Keiran Jack works out and they give him the number. I like the idea of creating a bit of history...and he seems to fit the bill.

In the preservation of the memory of a number and of a player, albeit a great one, Paul Kelly, Bob Skilton, and everyone else who wore that jumper, never got to see it in a victorious grand final.
When medals were being presented, #14 was not called.

It would serve the club right to have that happen again this year.

I wonder if past #14 players would have liked to see their old number in a winning GF side?

Why would any of the premiership players , LRT, Monty or whoever, want to give up their numbers for #14, however great it is. Their current numbers would have more significance to them.
