To some degree, and to its detriment, all football is played like that now.
So what role does Goodsey play exactly?

And the irony is that at junior levels, coaches seem to spend all their time saying "Not all of you need to follow the footy around! It's not U10s!"Comment

Forget about "what role does he actually play". The increased speed of the game, as well as the constant numbers behind the ball and flooding all-round has blurred the definition of more than a number of roles.
I look at the names in the "positions" put up these days, and there aren't many names I'd say in the Swans team, except say Leo Barry / LRT who aren't both ends of the ground at one time or other.
Players like Goodesy with his own fist n' foot has re-defined that kind of role, and I'd put in a stick for Hally for doing that too.
As for Goodesy as captain, I don't think that he played all that well as one of those rotating Captains last year. His focus on the game seemed a bit off. He's probably a couple of years off from something like that. And there are better up-and-coming leaders (e.g. the Big Mal)
His break-away-from-tackle goals are bloody beautiful to watch, and his sacrifice of stats for the team is what gives us that extra run up and down the field.
Goodes has been a legend, is a legend, and always shall be in my book.
And what a fantastic role-model he has been for other indigenous players...

Full wing follower.
He plays on the wing with other 21 for mine.
That is 17 on the ground split 9 x 8 on either side of the ground and the other 4 on the pine on the wing.Comment

14 players typically play full half wing centre followers - most of the team follows the ball around.
BTW - Goodes did actually play on the wing for a while on Saturday.Captain Logic is not steering this tugboat.

And the other 8 play full, full wing with the midgets playing as followers and the followers like Chambers playing small to counter the half back flankers who play tall around half forward.
The smalls like J Bolton push back to allow the mediums like Ablett to push forward to take passes from the skinnies like MOL, who pushes up to the wing to make up the required numbers in that position, in order to pass to the Abletts and the other smalls like Schneider and Davis who is really a medium but dont tell the opposition, to pick up the crumbs because "the" fans say we need crumbers, but there are no crumbs to be had because the seagulls get them first. So Schneider pushes back to between the 50 metre arcs to take the passes and play in and under on the wings where everyone else plays, so he can take the lay offs to Kennelly who then doubles back to pick up the second string tall on the opposite wing, where everyone else is.
C Bolton sits on the half back flank so he can take the back passes from Leo who pushes up to the wing because he likes a party and so he can perform his role and pick up copious stats by back passing to Bolton who hairs up the other wing and kicks to Schneider who is now playing tall and as a decoy to Davis who in turn is a decoy to BBH, because its obvious isn't it because no one ever kicks to Davis.
Buchy runs around in ever decreasing circles eventually disappearing you know where then bobs up later where you would least expect him. Fozzie copies him and bobs up guess where, you guessed it, the wing.
Dempster doesn't smile.
Kirk and Malceski play on the left wing because they are left footers and ROK pushes up to the same wing again acting as a decoy to BBH, MOL, Davis etc.
Only LRT knows where he plays, but likes to push up to the wing.
Dempster doesn't smile.
Crouchy has a brief to run no further than the wing. He brings the drinks for the party, then sprints back to tag Aker.
Willo works the wings.
BBH says stuff this crap, give me the footy, wins the game and the flag.
Dempster smiles.
After all that I think I agree with your analysis NMW.Comment

Davis pushed up to the wing as did Schneider - both good games with lots of possies around wing and centre.
Your assessment of Goodes as a full wing etc. was off the mark because he spent a lot of time away from there.
Buchy ran around in ever decreasing circles in the second Q and Ablett indeed pushed up the ground only he stuffed up his good work by poor shots on goal and passing inside 50.
Crouch went outside team rules and went forward twice for 2 shocker shots on goal. Jared you should know by now why you are not allowed forward.
LRT had no idea where he was playing.
Kirk tagged and lived between the 50 metre arcs.
ROK pushed up to wing because he is no longer allowed to have a shot for goal.Comment
