General footy chat Vale, Dennis Cometti.

Sad news for me with the death of Dennis Cometti, who I consider to be Australia's greatest sporting commentator. Nobody quite had his lightning wit, his genuinely funny observations, and he could even call the game quickly and accurately.

Bugger, dead at 76: that certainly seems like the third of two options.

A very sad day. Superb commentator that knew that waffle, boys club nonsense and inane dribbling like we hear most of the time now was totally unnecessary to doing your job superbly. Had some sensational one liners over the years too.
"You get the feeling that like Monty Python's Black Knight, the Swans would regard amputation as merely a flesh wound."

Perhaps my favourite was during a Crows match, when a couple of opposition players started wrestling with Andrew McLeod, and then some Crows players started remonstrating with those opponents.
Dennis piped up with, "I think they're saying, hey you, get offa McLeod!" (half singing along to the Stones song).

Hearing lots of tributes and famous Cometti one liners on SEN. My personal favourites:
After Malescki kicked the sealer late in the 2012 GF - "SYDNEY ARE PREMIERS!!!!"
Way back when Darren Gaspar was traded to Richmond and playing against us. Tigers up 1 point late in the game. Gaspar's set shot on goal hits the post. Most commentators would've said the "handy point" cleche, but not Dennis who delivered "Gaspar the friendly Post"

Vale Dennis, truely one of a kind.

He was the best commentator of my lifetime. Had everything - knowledge of the game, an ability to call it precisely, nailed big moments and genuinely funny. And never resorted to guffaw-like @@@@.

Plus he understood pausing and silence. Listen to his call of Malceski’s goal at the end of the 2012 GF. He used space to make the call better.

          Just the greatest.

Class above the present group of callers. Bruce and Dennis together were masterful.
