General footy chat Round 3: just other games.

Could be an enjoyable game tonight. Geelong are short priced favourites, probably because Adelaide haven't won at Geelong's strangely shaped ground since 2003, but I suspect that Adelaide are the better side. So it might be a fair bit closer than the odds suggest.

The final game of the round between Carlton and Melbourne might also be entertaining. Not that I think either side are likely contenders, it's more that seem sort of evenly matched, lower half teams.

Actually, now that I think about it, Adelaide have Dawson, Walker, Ah Chee and Laird out, so maybe that's why they're long odds? Although, Dangerfield is out for Geelong.

The media fascination with the ESS v Norf game this weekend is hysterically morbid

Adelaide getting thoroughly shafted by the umpiring.

Hard to know who to go for tonight, when I'd prefer to see both teams languishing in lower table obscurity. I suspect that the Daicos love from the commentators will have me going for the Giants, but I can’t see myself getting too enthusiastic.

High scoring at Marvel! Brisbane and St.Kilda between them have scored a whopping 1 goal 12 behinds in the first quarter. I've brought up the topic of Marvel producing dud games before and it was correctly pointed out to me that, often, it's the not so good teams that play there. Don't think the same can be said today, though. The reigning premiers against a team with finals aspirations can only manage one goal in a quarter at a ground that is dry and wind free because of the roof. Let's see if the game picks up in the second quarter!

While I didn't see last night's game, I am wondering if Brad Scott will be the first coach sacked this season? Currently 0/3 and I doubt if anyone seriously considers them a chance of making the finals from there. Next week they come up against a rampaging Bulldogs, who should be fresh after the bye and keen for a bit of flat track bullying. If Essendon lose that, it will be the 17th loss in a row, which will equal the club record for consecutive losses. Last year, they did have a crippling injury crisis, but this year, while it's significant, it's not that bad.

Of course, I've no real idea what the Essendon management are thinking, but there is a tough draw after that, which may test everybody's patience. Melbourne in gather round, then Gold Coast, Collingwood, Brisbane, GWS and Fremantle. You'd think that they'd have to win two of those to release the pressure, but I can’t really see that happening.

Then again, if Carlton lose to Melbourne today and North next week, then Voss will also be a strong contender.

It won’t matter. The whole club is a total mess.

Meanwhile, regardless of the final result, West Coast up with another good showing. They’ve still got a lot of holes in their list and they’re a few years off playing finals , but you can see the bones of their side coming together, particular up forward and through the middle of the ground.

I didn't see any of the game, but I'm wondering if West Coast are a little bit better than most people thought, or if Port are a fair bit worse? I suppose we'll get more of read on West Coast next week.

I only saw the last quarter of the Port/Eagles game but I think it's a little of both. Eagles certainly on the improve and Port - although they nearly snatched the game - were sub- standard. Eagles may be a challenge for us next week.

Carlton smashing the Dees at quarter time.

Hopefully there'll be a Carlton fade out, but it’s not currently looking likely.

I thought Port were a bottom four team this year.

But WC have certainly improved and have eight or nine 21 and under players you think will have at least solid careers. And whilst you never wanna go too early on these things, the Bowman vs Shanahan selection is looking dodgier every week.

Don't tempt me to start doing a Serong v Stephens thing with Shanahan, because I'm sure that I have plenty of posts leading up to that draft, saying that Shanahan would be my choice at the Dattoli pick. Of course, there's still plenty of time for both Dattoli and Bowman to become quality players, but still, Shanahan looks like he's going to be a gun.

Hmmm, looks like the Carlton fadeout really gained momentum, while I was taking a load of washing off the line and putting another one on. Long may it continue.
