Geez, I thought that tally was a misprint. The next highest as long as I've been recording Sydney's stats (back to 1990) was 38 by Mott on debut. Incredible.

Jees people can be so one-eyed when they want to be. Firstly, Jolly was pretty special, but he spent a considerable amount of time playing on McGuiness, who is about 6 inches shorter than him. At least half a dozen of his 'hitouts' were effectively totally uncontested because all the Dogs tried to do was read Jolly's tap better than the Swans. McGuinness didn't even jump.

Secondly, Chambers was actually not as 'terrible' as people say. He had one supreme tap down straight to Goodes, and was serviceable in ruck contests around the ground. It also seemed to me there were very few (if any) ruck contests where he was opposing McGuinness. By luck or design he seemed to get Street every time, and at worst broke even with him despite giving away quite a bit of height.

I really cant understand why people are so vitriolic against Torture. He is lumbering and poor below the knees, but if he can stay fit and just provide a break-even contest when he is on, he is doing a hell of a lot more for us than any other backup ruckman in our team. And at 23 he is far more impressive in his role in his first year with us than Kirk or Bucky were.

I think the Jolly / Chambers knew that we were coming into the game against a Reserve-grader ruckman, and that's why it was more dominant for us (I'd even say it was 40-60 w/ Chambers in the ruck, when he's normally been 30-70)..

Torture Chambers had a few possessions but the ones that he did have were a bit scrappy. Not blaming him for not kicking, as there wasn't much space free with the ferocious Doggies tackling, but that still isn't an excuse because he does have to be "competitive" (as per Roos' comment). It would put less pressure in the other guys in the clearances..

Jolly needs to learn how to avoid some of the frees he gives away.

A win is a win, and I'm LOVING it..!

We'll see how he progresses, as we do have Spida Everitt to play against next week..

For what it's worth, 5th second stringer means he is doing a job (Only the Weagles, Hawks, Blues and Crows have two ruckmen in these stats before Chambers).

Looking at that table, Jolly must be absolutely stoked to be ahead of Spida Everitt in the hit-outs, but I suppose that may be as a result of the way the Hawks are playing too (i.e. crap). I'm still of the thinking that Jolly is a 'better than average' ruckman, but in terms of technique and skills, there still is room for improvement. Technically I'd rate Everitt higher..

As for Doyle, he just got himself re-injured in the 2's, no use putting him in at this stage, since we've still got 2/3 of a season to train Chambers up and at least get him "competitive". His age and injury fragility would be a concern and our Mr. Torture actually has non-injury (as opposed to "fitness" lol) going FOR him.

Doyle WAS a good mark from my memory of him, I'm sure like a lot of other players (Nicks, Saddo, Schauble, etc) and wonder how well they "could've should've would've been" had they not had long stints with injury, and played crap on their return.

Talking about former Cats players, I wonder how Spriggs is doing.. anyone been watching the Reserve games? Looking on the homepage, Spriggs and Schmitt have been consistently named as some of the best over there..

I wonder how Schmitt will fare if he gets in from emergencies.. wonder if he will do a Malceski :P

Bravo Schneiderman, here's some more support for the Torrture, he is actually more adept at accurate tapping to advantage per tap than Jolls.

He even know when and how to thump long too, think Dennis mentioned a few weeks back that he thought he was channelling Polly Farmer.

His only issues are that he will need the pre-season to work with the coaching staff to lift the intensity of his play around the ground, speed and clean hands, athletacism and so forth.

I think we all tend to get a bit hyped up about not having some polished ruck combo that we can gloat about down the pub, but right now Torture is flying under the radar, tapping to advantage and Jude and Kirky have got more clearances than Spotlight.

Stephen can play FF, Paul can't. I think that Mick would look a lot better if he had a few more crumbing chances a game.
