General footy chat Round 18: the other games.

After last night's loss, I'm finding it a bit hard to get enthused about the rest of the round. Sure, being an AFL obsessive, I'm bound to watch something, but I really don't care who wins between Collingwood and North. Then on Saturday, I don't really have a preference between St Kilda and Port or Carlton and Hawthorn. Though I would like GWS to win, and hopefully push Geelong further into wildcard irrelevance. And I suppose it would be nice if Gold Coast got their season back on track, but I can't really see them beating Adelaide away.

Then on Sunday, there could be some real maulings. While there might be some chance of West Coast upsetting the Bulldogs, I don't really like the chances of Richmond against Melbourne and Essendon against Brisbane.

Wildcard round is a stupid commercial construct but you make a good point, no team is winning it from there so the more serious contenders slip back to that, the better. Which means I also have to cheer on Carlton, but here we are.

      .

I'm actually finding watching Pies/Norf quite cathartic.

Years ago, I would've said that Collingwood was the team I hate the most. A couple of other teams have become even more distasteful for me now and Norf is one of them. Hate their supporters and coach and I'm in the unusual position of wanting Collingwood to win. Plus, you've got to feel sorry for the Pies tonight. They've had to "travel" to Marvel Stadium for the game.

(To be fair to both teams, it was an entertaining first quarter.)

10 minutes to go, the free kicks are 10 - 21 in Norf's favour.

Boy GWS have done a job on Geelong in the second half. Feels a bit familiar in a weird way. And Jeremy Cameron is probably gone for season with a busted collarbone by the looks of it.

The Cats may be stuffed, having looked so good two months ago. A reminder of how long the season is.

Looks like Geelong have fallen in a big, ugly heap against GWS. Shame.

GWS have beaten Fremantle and Geelong in the past fortnight. I'm not unhappy about that. What concerns me is that Sydney plays GWS in two weeks.

Yes, if the Bulldogs manage to beat West Coast tomorrow, then Geelong are down to 9th: further into the irrelevant zone.

GWS have now beaten Geelong five games in a row. Sydney should watch and learn.

In a year of crap umpiring, we just have a new contender. Hawks took a mark on the 50, player lining up, umpire wanted to call move on but says “play”, then pings the Carlton player for charging off the mark when he hears it. Beyond parody, what we’ve seen this year.

And of course, the VFL will find a way to excuse it.

                      Awful, wasn't it?

The good thing was that it was against Carlton.
The bad thing was that it gifted a goal to Ginnivan.

Hawthorn getting a "go" from the umpires that the Bulldogs would be jealous of.

Well, it was surprising to learn Matt Stevic is still allowed to umpire Hawthorn games.

And the umpire making that decision was none other than Matt “one of the best in the business” Stevic.

West Coast have really kicked themselves out of this game.
